Tutor Bio

Hi, my name is William, and I'd like to be your English tutor. I have over 8 years ESL tutoring experience with children and adult professionals. I hold a Master's degree in Spanish linguistics with a focus on second language acquisition. I have a Certificate in Instructing Adults, and a Teacher of English for Speakers of other Languages (TESOL) certificate. My passion is to help people have better conversations in English.

From the first session, my focus is on you: your goals, your interests, and your specific areas for improvement. One-on-one classes enable direct interaction with the instructor, ensuring each lesson is tailored to your pace and learning style. This not only facilitates faster progress but also creates a comfortable and motivating environment to practice and refine your English conversation skills.
Through topics and activities that you're passionate about, each lesson becomes an opportunity to speak, listen, and think in English naturally and spontaneously. Whether you're interested in business, travel, technology, or any other field, our course uses these interests to keep sessions engaging and relevant.

Additionally, you'll receive immediate and constructive feedback, helping you correct errors and improve your fluency and pronunciation. Consistent practice with a native English speaker will give you the confidence to communicate effectively in any situation, from everyday conversations to professional presentations.

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

I like the word humanitarian because it embodies the core values I strive for as an English Coach. My work is not just about teaching a language; it's about helping people open doors to new opportunities, improving their quality of life, and empowering them to connect with others. Whether I'm coaching someone for a job interview or helping them feel more confident speaking while travelling, I see my role as contributing to their personal and professional growth—and ultimately making a positive impact on their lives. Humanitarian reminds me that the work I do is deeply human and transformative.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

Why do I like poutine and butter tarts? Well, who wouldn’t? Poutine is the ultimate comfort food—crispy fries, rich gravy, and melty cheese curds all coming together in this glorious mess that just hits the spot every time. It’s like the perfect hug in food form. As for butter tarts, they’re the sweet, gooey little treats that feel like a reward for making it through the day. The flaky pastry, the rich, buttery filling… it’s a dessert that you just can’t say no to! As for my favorite dish from my hometown, I’d have to go with good old Montreal smoked meat. It’s this deliciously seasoned, slow-cooked beef sandwich that just melts in your mouth. I don’t live there anymore, but luckily, there’s a great local restaurant nearby that does a pretty decent version. It’s not quite the same, but it’s close enough to cure the occasional homesickness!

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

Besides teaching English, I’m also fluent in Spanish at a C2 level and have a B2 level in French. I love learning languages because it helps me connect with people from different cultures and understand their perspectives. While English is my primary focus as a coach, I’ve found that knowing Spanish and French really helps me empathize with the challenges my students face when learning a new language. Plus, it’s always fun to compare the similarities and differences between languages!

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

Outside of teaching, I have a variety of interests that keep me energized and balanced. I love gardening—there’s something really calming about being in nature and watching things grow. I’m also passionate about travel, discovering new places, and experiencing different cultures. At home, I enjoy taking care of my pet and spending quality time with family and friends. I’m a big foodie, so eating out and trying different world cuisines is always a highlight for me. These interests help me stay curious and bring new perspectives into my teaching!

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

I don’t really consider myself to have a single hometown because I’ve moved around so much, but there are a few places that hold a special place in my heart. Kingston, Ontario feels like home with its charm and sense of community. Toronto is where I experienced so much cultural diversity and excitement—it’s vibrant and full of life. Montreal? It’s all about the food, the arts, and that unique blend of French and English cultures. And then there’s Gijon, Asturias in Spain, which I adore for its beautiful coastal views, rich history, and the warmth of the people. Each of these places has shaped who I am, and I feel a strong connection to all of them.
