Why Hebrew?
Four reasons to take Hebrew classes
A Language Resurrected From the Ancient World
Hebrew is the only language in history successfully revived from a purely liturgical tongue into a living, modern language. Learning it is participating in a linguistic miracle.
Read the Bible in Its Original Language
Whether for scholarship or faith, reading the Hebrew Bible in the original reveals wordplay, poetry, and meaning that no translation can capture.
Connect With Israel's Innovation Economy
Israel has more startups per capita than any country on Earth. Hebrew opens the door to the "Startup Nation" beyond its English-facing surface.
Join a Tight-Knit Global Community
Hebrew speakers worldwide share deep cultural bonds through holidays, literature, and history. Speaking Hebrew transforms you from an outsider to a participant.

Hebrew in Los Angeles
Hebrew is the only language in human history that was fully revived from a liturgical language into an everyday spoken tongue. For nearly two thousand years it existed only in religious texts and scholarly writing. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was deliberately reconstructed as a modern spoken language, primarily by Eliezer Ben-Yehuda and a generation of Zionist educators in Palestine. Today about 9 million people speak Modern Hebrew, the official language of Israel. The script runs right to left, has 22 letters, and most short vowels are not written in everyday text. Modern Hebrew grammar uses a three-consonant root system (like Arabic): a small set of consonants forms the backbone of a word, and patterns of vowels and prefixes build related meanings from that root.
The Jewish community in LA is one of the largest in the world outside Israel, with concentrations across the Westside (Pico-Robertson, Beverlywood, Beverly Hills), the Valley (Tarzana, Encino, Sherman Oaks), and the Hancock Park area. Many of our Hebrew students are families preparing for aliyah or extended trips to Israel, b’nai mitzvah students learning to read Torah portions, adults reconnecting with their Jewish heritage, or partners of Israeli-Americans wanting to talk to in-laws. We also work with academics and graduate students reading biblical or rabbinic Hebrew for scholarly purposes.
Strommen has been matching students with private Hebrew tutors in Los Angeles since 2014. Our tutors are native Israeli speakers who can teach Modern Hebrew for everyday conversation, biblical or liturgical Hebrew for religious study, or both depending on your goals. Lessons are one on one, online or in person, and your tutor builds every session around what you actually need: bar mitzvah trope, Israeli slang, or the formal Hebrew of news and academic writing.
No public Hebrew group classes right now — but we can set up a semi-private class for your family, friends, or company with as few as two people. Get in touch.
Hebrew class FAQ
What is the best way to learn Hebrew?
Conversation with a native Israeli speaker, combined with learning to read the alphabet early. Modern Hebrew is a spoken language first — it was designed to be used in everyday life, and it sounds nothing like the liturgical Hebrew you might hear in synagogue. A native tutor teaches you the rhythms, slang, and shortcuts that real Israelis use. Learning to read the consonant-only script takes practice, but a tutor can get you reading basic words within a few weeks.
How long does it take to learn Hebrew?
The State Department estimates 1,100 class hours for professional proficiency (Category III). Basic conversational ability comes sooner — most dedicated students can navigate everyday situations within 6-9 months. The root system actually speeds things up once you learn it, because recognizing a three-letter root lets you guess the meaning of words you've never seen before.
Is Hebrew hard for English speakers?
It's a moderate challenge. The alphabet is new, you read right to left, and written Hebrew usually drops vowels — which means you need context to know how a word is pronounced. On the other hand, Hebrew grammar is more regular than English. Verbs follow predictable patterns based on their root, and there are far fewer exceptions than in languages like French or German. Pronunciation is also manageable — most sounds exist in English.
Can I take Hebrew classes online?
Yes. Our Hebrew tutors teach online via video call, and it works particularly well because screen sharing lets you practice reading and writing the script in real time. Many of our students are in the Valley or on the Westside and prefer the convenience of online sessions. You keep the same tutor each week, and lessons are built entirely around your objectives.
