Why English?
Four reasons to take English classes
Get Ahead at Work
Whether you are polishing your business writing, preparing for presentations, or aiming for a promotion that requires sharper communication, stronger English skills translate directly into career advancement. This is true for non-native speakers and native speakers alike.
Nail the Audition
Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world, and clear, controlled English is a baseline requirement. Actors, voice artists, and on-camera talent need speech coaching that goes beyond accent work into pacing, diction, and emotional range.
Write With Confidence
College essays, graduate school applications, professional reports, creative projects. If your ideas are strong but your writing does not match, a tutor who focuses on structure, grammar, and style can close that gap faster than any app or YouTube video.
Build a Stronger Foundation
Parents looking for English tutoring for their kids, international professionals sharpening grammar, or anyone who wants to stop second-guessing their word choices. Private lessons meet you exactly where you are and work on what actually matters to you.

English in Los Angeles
Strommen has been teaching English in Los Angeles for over 18 years, and our students are not one type. Some are international professionals in Century City or Downtown who speak English well but want to write better, present more clearly, or stop hesitating in meetings. Some are parents in Koreatown, East LA, or Glendale who need practical English for school conferences, medical appointments, and job applications. Some are actors and voice artists who need precise control over their speech. And some are native English speakers — high school students working on essays, adults improving their grammar, professionals who want sharper business writing.
Los Angeles draws people from everywhere, and English is the common thread. But “learning English” means something completely different depending on who you are. A software engineer from Seoul polishing her presentation skills has nothing in common with a tenth grader struggling through AP English Lit. That is why we do private lessons — because a classroom cannot serve both of those students at the same time, and a tutor can.
Our English instructors are matched to your specific goals. Sessions are available online or in person, and scheduling is flexible. Whether you are preparing for a standardized test, building writing skills for work, helping your child catch up in school, or refining your spoken English for auditions or public speaking, we start where you are and build from there.
“I hired a Strommen tutor to help with my grad school essays and ended up working with her for six months on everything — emails, presentations, even cover letters. My writing is sharper now and I actually enjoy the process.”D.K. — Graduate student, UCLA
No public English group classes right now — but we can set up a semi-private class for your family, friends, or company with as few as two people. Get in touch.
English class FAQ
What is the difference between English tutoring and ESL classes?
ESL is designed specifically for people whose first language is not English, focusing on the interference patterns that their native language creates. Our general English tutoring covers a broader range — writing improvement, grammar review, speech coaching, academic English, professional communication, and literacy skills for both native and non-native speakers. If you are a non-native speaker, we will match you with the same tutor pool (our ESL-trained instructors), but the lesson plan may look different depending on your goals. If you are a native speaker who wants to improve your writing or public speaking, that is a different kind of lesson entirely.
Can I take English classes online or do I need to come in person?
All of our English tutoring is available online via video call. Most students choose online because it fits more easily around work and family schedules. Writing review, grammar exercises, and conversation practice all work well over video. In-person sessions are also available across Los Angeles if you prefer face-to-face instruction. Your tutor stays the same either way.
How long does it take to see real improvement in English?
It depends on where you are starting and what you are working on. Pronunciation and speaking confidence tend to improve noticeably within the first month of regular sessions. Writing improvement takes longer because it involves building new habits around structure, word choice, and revision. Most students who commit to weekly lessons see meaningful progress within two to three months. Your tutor sets specific benchmarks so improvement is not just a feeling — you can actually measure it.
How much do private English lessons cost compared to group classes?
Private lessons cost more per hour than group classes, but you cover more ground per session because every minute is spent on your specific needs. Group classes divide the instructor's attention and move at the pace of the group, which means you spend time on material you already know and not enough on what you actually struggle with. We do not publish rates on this page because pricing depends on the tutor's experience and your scheduling preferences — contact us and we will give you an honest quote within 24 hours.
