French in Los Angeles
Strommen has been matching students with private French tutors in Los Angeles since 2006. We run private lessons and group classes, including conversation workshops, beginner intensives, movie nights, and wine tastings. French is one of our most popular languages, and our tutor roster reflects that. Most of our students come to us preparing for a business trip to Paris, reconnecting with Francophone family, or finally getting around to the language they said they would learn ten years ago.
LA has a long-standing French community centered around the Westside and Beverly Hills. The French consulate is in Beverly Hills, the Lycée Français de Los Angeles draws families from across the city, and French restaurants, bakeries, and cultural events run from Brentwood to Silver Lake. A lot of our students work with French-speaking talent in the entertainment industry, send their kids to French immersion schools, or work in luxury, fashion, and hospitality where French is still the prestige language.
Our French tutors and dialect coaches have worked on major film productions, including coaching Patrick Stewart for Star Trek: Picard and Kristen Stewart for Against All Enemies. That precision carries into private lessons. We match you with a native speaker who teaches the way French is actually spoken in Paris or Montréal, not the textbook version, with the slang and shortcuts that make you sound like you belong.

Should I take private or group French classes?
Private classes are more flexible — schedule any time, cancel with 24 hours notice, and the entire hour is focused on you. Group classes follow a set schedule and are more social. We recommend private for rapid progress and group for fun and community. Many students do both.
How long does it take to learn French?
The FSI puts French at Category I — the easiest tier for English speakers. With regular private lessons, most students reach comfortable conversational ability within 6 to 9 months. Ten hours of private classes covers roughly the same ground as a full university semester. We also offer intensive immersion programs for faster results.
Is French hard for English speakers?
French is one of the easier languages for English speakers. About 30% of English vocabulary comes from French, so you already know more words than you think. The pronunciation takes practice — especially the nasal vowels and the French R — but the grammar is more regular than English in many ways. Most students find it accessible from day one.
Can I take French classes online?
Yes. All of our French tutors offer online lessons via Zoom or Google Meet. We also run some group classes online. The results are just as strong as in-person sessions.
Do you offer a free French level test?
Yes — we have a free online CEFR level test for French at strommeninc.com/language-tests/french-level-test/. It takes about 10 minutes and tells you where you are from A1 to C2.
What about French for kids?
We teach French to kids of all ages, including heritage speakers attending French immersion schools like Lycee Francais. Our tutors adjust their approach for younger learners — more games and conversation, less grammar drilling.
