Helene

Bonjour! Je m'appelle Helene- my name is Helene. I am originally from a part of France called Brittany, on the northwestern coast. I went to college and Conservatory there and graduated with a degree in Music and another in Literature, two of my greatest passions. My love of adventure took me to California and Mexico in 1995 - I fell in love with the city of San Francisco and ended up staying for good. I taught French and Music in French-American schools in the Bay Area for many years, while also working on my craft as a singer-songwriter, writing, recording and performing regularly. I believe that learning a language is very similar to learning music - and private instruction allows for fast progress and a format that caters to the student's needs and interests. I am looking forward to hepling you along you on this linguistic and cultural adventure!

As I teach young children (3 to 6) the teaching approach is very playful and interactive in any subject we teach. The use of songs is important especially for the language acquisition, (luckily I love to sing 🙂 ), pretend play is also very efficient for both academics and language skills, with a theater background I love to help the children develop their identity while learning.

My approach consists of defining what the student wants to achieve and the amount of time they want to achieve it in, and then design a curriculum that will enable them to reach their goal. Every student is different and I like to tailor my approach to what they need, but the most crucial thing is that they are rewarded with measurable progress for their investment in the work and in their tutor.

Marie

I was born and raised in France. I arrived in the United States in 2000 with my family and became a US citizen in 2010. Every year, I make it a point to visit France at least once. This allows me to stay connected not only to my family and friends but also to the wonderful French culture, aspects of which I am then able to share with my students. I am very passionate about French grammar and structure, not to mention literature and culture, and I have been able to pass on this enthusiasm to my students as well. When I teach, I try to communicate clearly, patiently, and with belief in my students. My goal is to always make learning both interesting and fun. I encourage my students in a supportive environment so they can learn and express themselves without fear or intimidation.

Nima Raymond

Bonjour ! My name is Nima and I was born and bred in Paris, where I've graduated in History, Communication and Journalism from the Sorbonne. I have since moved to the LA region, where I've been tutoring French for the past year and a half, both one-on-one and to small groups of students of all ages and all levels. I've done so following the TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) method, which states that foreign languages should be acquired naturally, just as one's mother tongue, rather than learned by heart, in an abstract way. A highly conversation- and interaction-driven (unlike what its name might imply) method that aims at being the closest possible to immersion in a foreign country, TPRS also helps beginners in gaining self-confidence, by realizing how much French vocabulary they already have, since it thoroughly relies on cognates those hundreds, if not thousands of French words you already know from English, thanks to William the Conqueror! However, I constantly tailor my classes to my students' will and needs. So if you are already at an intermediate or advanced level, we would mostly use conversation about articles and texts dealing with your interests. These provide new vocabulary, as well as idiomatic expressions that are more in touch with the evolution of the target language than many textbooks are. I also value the fact that they allow to study grammar in context and in a more personalized way, by targeting the student's difficulties and devoting time to the rules he or she doesn't master yet. But enough said about me! Why don't you tell me about your needs, difficulties, and the reasons of your interest in learning French? I look forward to hearing about them, in order to help you as accurately as I can.

Erin

As a young, beret-wearing girl in Chicago, I always knew I was bound for France one day. Fast forward a few decades, after living in Prague studying Czech and fine arts, after living in Panama as a language and art teacher and writing for an eco-tourism journal, I soon found my way to Marseilles, France teaching for 8+ years while exploring the dynamic and vivid intricacies of the Mediterranean culture. I have taught in public and private schools, colleges and universities, community centers and language centers, in living rooms and in web classrooms. Wherever we are, I am dedicated to tailoring the class to your specific needs, desires and of course who you are! As an attentive and adapative instructor, I am determined to expanding the experience of learning beyond those traumatic memories of high school French class and helping you feel comfortable as a communicator. The student-teacher exchange is a professional one, but it sure doesn't need to be boring or stressful! Language is a simply an aspect of culture, so let's explore the ins and outs. Who knows, I might even share my favorite quiche recipe! (Note: Erin's rates are higher)

Hi! My name is Maria, I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Montreal. French & Spanish are both my “First language”. Growing up I loved languages and by 6th grade I was trilingual. I’m curious by nature and wanted to discover the world and its beautiful cultures so I decided to travel as much as I could and moved to Guatemala, the land of my ancestors, for 6 months and was able to teach English and French in an Academy. Then I went to Spain to study for a year while doing my Bachelor in Psychology & Sociology. I graduated from the Université de Montreal and relocated to this beautiful city after marrying the man of my dreams (sigh). Othman

Hi there! I’m passionate about foreign languages, and I want to share my experience and knowledge with my students! Originally from Paris, France, I had the chance to live in several countries including Argentina and Mexico (I currently live in Guadalajara, Mexico). I studied an MBA both in France and in Argentina and, I also trained large teams in big American companies such as Apple, Ford Motor Company or Groupon which allows me today to be very rigorous in my work. On the other hand, I have supported several students and helped them to improve their level of French and Spanish, according to their expectations and personal projects. Finally, I am also a student: I take Italian and Arabic private lessons because my dream would be to be fluent in at least 5 languages! For all these reasons I will be fully able to understand your needs, your difficulties and I would be happy to help you to achieve your expectations. I know that learning a language takes a lot of time and effort and sometimes it can discourage students. My job will be to make the lessons interesting, fun and structured in order to keep your motivation intact and make you achieve your dream of being fluent in one of these two languages!!! During the sessions we will have some fun and challenging tasks to help us reach your goal of speaking a new foreign language. We are going to work, play, learn hard and have fun in the process. I have high expectations for all of my students and I am committed to assisting them with the expectations required of the course! The format of our class will be highly structured and will provide students with the flexibility to choose amongst various projects and topics. In addition to regular projects and homework, I will be expecting all work assigned in class to be completed at home. Lastly, I love swimming, photography, aviation (I am about to get my PPL) and I am a huge fan of Roger Federer! I also enjoy travelling and eating French pastries! I look forward to meeting you soon!

Sophie

Salut! Je m’appelle Sophie! I developed a love of French language and culture very early on—since both my aunt and cousins were born and raised in Paris. I attended Columbia University and then Stony Brook University—graduating Summa Cum Laude with a BA in Theatre Performance and a Minor in French Language. I was a French TA throughout college, and I found that I very much enjoyed helping students one-on-one. I later went on to study French language and literature in the medieval city of Montpellier in southern France, and since then have been able to visit my cousins in Paris relatively frequently. I even had the opportunity to perform with a theatre company from NYC in a half French/half English production of Henry V in the town of Agincourt (Azincourt, en français) in Northern France, to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the famous battle that took place there. While I am also a professional actor, in 2020 I was drawn back to my love of tutoring and helping students master the French language. I was able to experience the joy of introducing young children and beginner foreign language learners to French—and found that incorporating French music and French cuisine made the experience particularly rich. In terms of methodology, I have never believed that one generalized teaching technique fits all; it has been my experience that different individuals learn in different ways. Therefore I think it is very important at the outset to listen carefully to what each student desires to achieve, and the things that they tend to struggle with—and then specifically tailor one’s approach from there. To me, that is the major advantage of one-on-one learning. I can’t wait to embark on this exciting French language journey together! À bientôt!

Serge Yvan

I am a proud advocate of multiculturality. My ancestry and family history have strong intercultural roots (French, Spanish, Italian and Mexican). I remember my grandparents reading me different stories in three different languages and different places: French, Spanish and Italian. The first words I heard were in French from my mom, but my dad always insisted on teaching me both Spanish and Italian to somehow rival my mom culturally, so I did not lose track of my other backgrounds. When I was only 9 months old, my parents and I moved to France. I grew up in a beautiful city, the capital of France's Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region: Lyon. My dad’s job involved moving throughout France, Spain, Belgium, and Italy. Moving to northwestern Mexico (Chihuahua and Baja California) because my father inherited a ranch and a vineyard, did not represent a cultural shock but meeting instead the other part of me I was never able to discover while in Europe. I, thus, embrace cultural diversity, and would always love to bridge cultures through my job as a language tutor along with my mission as an internationalist whose flag is diversity, inclusion, and tolerance. So far, I have two majors: International Relations and French Language and Culture. Also, I am close to graduating with a BA in Italian Teaching, and one more in English Language Teaching. I simultaneously studied two of them and started college at age 16. I am currently writing the thesis of a master’s degree in International Cooperation at the University of Bologna, ranked oldest in the Western hemisphere, among the most prestigious in the world. I began tutoring French, Italian, Spanish and ESL when I was 16 years old. I have taught all these languages for about nine years, and I do not feel like stopping ever in my life. Every time I teach them, I become a cultural ambassador of the countries where they are spoken, which is a huge amount of land in the world. I love spending time surfing, jogging, hiking and occasionally trekking. I also enjoy cooking, listening to music and walking my three beautiful dogs by the beach. I would not tag myself in terms of leisure activities, as I could go from playing some video games, to watching a nice movie while having ice cream, or spending a Saturday rainy afternoon with friends at an art gallery or a music concert. I do not believe in a single teaching methodology. As a recent graduate of a BA in French language, I learned that combining teaching techniques and methodologies results in a more personalized teaching style, always aiming to tailor my teaching to the needs of my students. Notwithstanding, the communicative approach is a solid base of my practice. I was a language learner too. When I was learning English and German in Europe I really appreciated when I had a teacher who made me speak. So, I’ll make you speak. Finally, I highly recommend using “Alter Ego” and “Tendances” for French, “Chiaro” and “Caffè Italia” for Italian, “Aula Internacional”, “Nuevo Español en Marcha”, and “Gramática de Uso del Español” for Spanish and “Top Notch” for English. I take language tutoring seriously.

Bonjour ! I’m originally from Paris, France. I’m a professional French tutor, professor, professional director and actress. I am a graduate from Sorbonne University of Paris and L’ENSATT (École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre) . I lived in New York for over 10 years before moving to LA last year. As an actor, I've had a parallel career as a mentor and consultant in public speaking. Celine

Bonjour! My name is Celine and I am a native French speaker. I was raised in Marseille in a French family and have always been exposed to those languages and cultures. I hold a Baccalaureate of French Literary Language with an associate degree in tourism. I subsequently wrote for many popular magazines in Paris as a French travel journalist, which led to the creation of my own French-language magazine when I moved to the US. As the mother of three children in Beverly Hills schools, we all speak French perfectly, which is our main language at home. After such a long journey in French-language journalism and the relationships it has brought me, I have chosen to give way to a larger team that continues to edit and distribute this great French magazine throughout the United States. Afterwards, I was able to take advantage of my experience to teach the French language and devote myself entirely to this activity. I teach French to children, teens and adults of all ages, online or in person. I customize all of my lessons for each student and use materials that are either self-composed in writing, illustrated with drawings and exercises, or taken from professional books used in American schools teaching French. My classes are very interactive, progressive and lively. My students learn very quickly, with taste, to have a real conversation in French, with grammatical rules perfectly learned and mastered, as well as to acquire a knowledge of the culture of this country with its thousand facets. I look forward to teaching you this beautiful language, rich in vocabulary, which is waiting to be learned. See you soon, I hope!

Delphine

My name is Delphine. I'm French and Parisian, but I've been living in Denver, Colorado, for 3 years now. Having been a teacher for several years, I have had the opportunity to work with audiences of very varied ages, ethnic and cultural origins, and socio-professional categories. To meet the needs of these very different audiences, I had to adapt, put in place training plans, and design my educational tools. Over the years, I realized how important it was to offer “strong” content, that is to say, ambitious content where we show, hear the foreign language, and think in this language. Very quickly, I challenge my students with works (literary and/or cinematographic) that reference complex social issues, and therefore have a dense and deep language culture. You have to study a language head-on: you take a text, an audio document, you read, you listen, you try to understand, you observe (the vocabulary, the linguistic structures...), you move forward... you re-use these new statements and linguistic forms, we practice, we start again! My approach is communicative because my students are in continuous interaction with me and/or with each other but structured. In each of my classes, we usually start with a holistic understanding of the topic presented in the chosen material. Then, gradually, we move towards a more detailed comprehension of this material to finally arrive at observation and study of the French language itself, thanks to the linguistic markers or skills that I have emphasized and that I would like the students to master.
