The Arabic Dialects

A group of the semitic languages within the  Afroasiatic family of languages, Arabic is comprised of many regional dialects that have varying degrees of mutual intelligibility, that is in part dependent on proximity of user groups. Some far flung dialects can be almost unintelligible.  Most of the variations arise in the spoken and colloquial Arabic, versus the relatively regimen ted and structured standard Arabic. Another division is between the dialects spoken by the bedouin versus the more sedentary populations. Geographically, modern Arabic is divided into 6 main groups:

• Maghrebi
• Sudanese
• Egyptian
• Mesopotamian
• Levantine
• Peninsular
