The Chinese Dialects

There are several varieties of Chinese that have common origins in middle and Literary Chinese. In comparison to Europe, the presence of an uninterrupted bureaucratic state that used a particular official language has led to a more unified linguistic continuum in China, versus Europe where Latin gave rise to a number of Romance languages. The following is a list of the most prevalent dialects in modern China:

• Xiang
• Min
• Hakka
• Yue (includes Cantonese)
• Jin
• Huizhou
• Pinghua
