The Numerous Dialects of Germany
Modern German can also be referred to as standard German. However there are numerous extant regional dialects that have long histories and in some cases can even be regarded as almost distinct languages. These dialects can be sorted into two main groupings: Low and High German. Low German was previously prevalent throughout the countries of the former Hanseatic League. However, beginning in the 16th century, High German began to become the lingua franca of literature and science, being used more and more by scholars. By the advent of the 18th century and mass education, Standard German became the main form taught in schools. Standard German is mostly based on Central and Upper German.
