The Numerous Japanese Dialects

There are two primary groups of Japanese dialects: Eastern (including Tokyo) and Western (including Kyoto), with additional sub-variants such as the dialect of Kyushu and Hachijo islands. The Ryukyuean languages of Okinawa are technically not dialects of Japanese but rather related languages of the Japonic family.
