There are Northern, Central and Southern dialect groupings, with the central set being intermediary between the Northern and Southern dialects:

  • Northern Russian
    • Pomor
    • Ladoga-Tikhvin
    • Transitional groups: Onega, Lacha, Belozersk-Bezhetsk
    • Vologda

      • Groups with okanye (Gdov, Luga, Novgorod, Staraya Russa, Valday)
      • Groups with akanye (Pskov, Velikiye Luki, Toropets, Rzhev, Torzhok)
    • Eastern
      • Groups with okanye (Tver, Klin, Sergiev Posad, Vlaimir, Suzdal, Rostov, Ivanovo, Murom, Nizhny Novgorod)
