The Russian Dialects
Modern Russian can be grouped into three main sub-categories, with many further subdivisions of dialects. The basic division is on the basis of geographic division and the use of specific pronunciations (eg. of the proto-Slavic g). There are Northern, Central and Southern dialect groupings, with the central set being intermediary between the Northern and Southern dialects:
- Northern Russian
- Pomor
- Ladoga-Tikhvin
- Transitional groups: Onega, Lacha, Belozersk-Bezhetsk
- Vologda
- Kostroma-Yaroslavl
- Central or Middle Russian
- Western
- Groups with okanye (Gdov, Luga, Novgorod, Staraya Russa, Valday)
- Groups with akanye (Pskov, Velikiye Luki, Toropets, Rzhev, Torzhok)
- Eastern
- Groups with okanye (Tver, Klin, Sergiev Posad, Vlaimir, Suzdal, Rostov, Ivanovo, Murom, Nizhny Novgorod)
