Learn more about Deborah

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

“sonder.” Sonder means the realization that every person you see—strangers included—has a life as vivid, complex, and emotionally rich as your own. I love it because it instantly expands your perspective. It turns a crowded room or a random passerby into a reminder of shared humanity, stories you’ll never fully know, and lives unfolding in parallel to yours.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

My favorite dish from my hometown is Jollof rice and chicken. It’s something I grew up eating, and it’s tied to family gatherings and local traditions, so it feels like home to me. The flavors are simple but comforting, and it’s one of those meals that instantly brings back memories. I don’t live there anymore, but there’s a local restaurant called Bukka Hut, that makes an excellent version of it—they stay true to the original recipe, which makes it feel like a small taste of home.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

In addition to the languages I teach, I’ve studied other languages at varying levels. Even when I’m not fluent, the process of learning them has been valuable—it keeps me curious, empathetic as a teacher, and always thinking about how to explain language concepts more clearly.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

Outside of teaching at Strømmen, I enjoy activities that keep me curious and balanced. I like reading—especially books related to language, culture, and personal development—and I spend time exploring different cultures through travel, food, and music. I also enjoy staying active and finding creative outlets, which helps me bring fresh energy and perspective into the classroom.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

Where ever my heart is, is home.
