Tutor Bio
Hello, my name is Jared. I was born and raised in a small country town called Brooksville in Florida. After high school, I discovered my passion for teaching, which led me to study public speaking and how to interact with an audience. I eventually got a bachelor’s degree in Communication in Performance Studies from the University of South Florida.
After completing my bachelor’s degree, I moved to California and got an opportunity to work as an Instructional Aide for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. This job aims to help them get equal access to education and teach them how to perform in mainstream classrooms so they can be successful. Many deaf students don’t have communication at home, and I want to change that by exposing them to the Deaf community. They can learn how to interact with and approach deaf people.
Due to my passion for teaching, I was accepted into the Master’s in Sign Language Education program and graduated from Gallaudet University in 2018. I'm currently teaching at a few college campuses and working as an ASL consultant for TV/Film.

What is your favorite word in your language and why?
My favorite sign in ASL would be "umm..." and I use it a lot!

What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?
I was born and raised in a small town in Florida, and I love southern foods! I especially love my mother's famous shepherd's pie, which I can eat for days!

Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?
I took two years of Latin in high school and enjoyed learning the history of Greece and Rome. Greek and Roman mythology is my favorite topic!

What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?
My hobbies are watching horror films, surfing, and hiking with my partner and two furbabies!

What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?
I moved to LA in 2015, and it is my hometown. I love its culture, food, community diversity, and many more!
