Tutor Bio

With a degree in applied linguistics from UCLA, an MA in TESOL from Cal State LA, and over a decade of tutoring and teaching experience, I apply my strong educational background and years of experience to help students achieve their goals in English fluency, mastery of accent, confidence in public speaking, or any other goal related to language and learning. As a lover of linguistics and learner foreign language myself, I take my experience living and learning languages abroad to inform my teaching practices. Having spent time in China, Japan, and Mexico, I understand the language learning experience and am passionate about how language helps us as humans connect with one another. I also have a passion for art, music, phonetics and phonology, and anything relating to the sounds of language. If you are looking for a teacher who is passionate about using language to connect with a global community and or an accent coach with the years of experience helping students gain confidence and find their voice in English, please consider booking a lesson with me today. I would love to meet you and find out what you are passionate about and help you find ways to express yourself with confidence in English.

Learn more about Joaquin

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

"Why not?" was a phrase that a Japanese friend of mine told me once was his favorite expression in English. It's so simple, and although it may not be that unique or even exclusive to English, I just remember him telling me how he loved how it sounded and the type of confidence it showed whenever he said it. The phrase "why not?" carries with it a sort of openness to exploration, doing things without fear, and a desire to just give something a try without caring to find any reason not to.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

I'm from San Diego where there is a lot of Mexican American food, and I love potato rolled tocos. In Spanish, they are flautas de papas, but in either language, they are delicious.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

I've studied Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish. Out of the three, my Japanese is the best.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

I am a musician, an artist, and a music lover. I also love to cook. It's easy to strike up a conversation about any of those things with me.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

San Diego is my hometown. I love the diverse community and the food, and of course, the weather is fantastic.
