Tutor Bio

Bonjour! Je m’appelle Marie – my name is Marie. I am originally from Bayonne, in the Basque region, south west of France. I studied at the university of Bordeaux and graduated in Foreign Languages. I then moved to London in 2005, where i started teaching French in schools as a French assistant and to private students. I taught all levels and ages, businessmen and bankers in the City, corporations like MTV , in groups and one to one classes. I also worked at Sega, checking the language in video games and translating. After a few years, my taste for adventure took me to America, which i always dreamed of. I spent a few years in sunny Florida then moved to Los Angeles where i started tutoring again. It is always exciting for me to meet people who love France and the French language and i am passionate about helping them reach their linguistic goals. I will help you conquer your fears and show you that even if it’s not the easiest language, you can do it! My classes are always relaxed and fun. Alors à bientôt!

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

Une pantalonnade. Now this is a bit of an inside joke with my dad, it just makes us laugh a lot and since i love and miss my dad being so far away, i'll say it's my favorite word. It means a joke, a farce. When you think something is ridiculous/outrageous/pathetic you can say it but it's not very common!

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

I am mostly vegan so the specialties from my hometown i can't eat; my town Bayonne is famous for its ham, and everything charcuterie. There are not many vegetarian options in restaurants unfortunately, but there is some progress! Now, since i studied in Bordeaux, i will say i love the Cannelé. It is crunchy outside and soft inside, with rhum and vanilla; it's so delicious!

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

I have studied Swedish sporadically for a very long time; Stockholm is my favorite European city and i have a lot of friends there so i go visit often. Unfortunately people are fluent in English so it can be hard to practice!

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

I love hiking, working out, pet sitting, going to rock and metal concerts, hanging with my friends.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

I was born in Bayonne France and my family is there so it will always be my hometown. But the hometown i chose later in life is Los Angeles, where i currently live. The weather and the palm trees always make me happy! Anything can happen here and your dreams can come true. I also love that there are people from everywhere, and most of my friends are from France, England, and Sweden!
