Tutor Bio
Hejsan, my name is Martina. I was born and raised in Jönköping, Sweden, but I have lived half my life in Los Angeles. My love of the word led me to major in languages (Swedish, English, French, Spanish, Danish), and I am excited to have been a teacher for Strommen for quite a few years. I have a Master in Education and Swedish teaching credentials to teach Swedish as a Foreign/Second Language (and English), all levels, from young children to adults. Swedish is a really fun language with a few quirks, and I look forward to teaching you all about it in class!
Degrees and Certificates
- Degrees: Gothenburg University
- Certications: Master of Education (Uppsala University), Bachelor in Swedish as a Foreign/Second Language & English, Swedish teaching credentials in both. Bachelor of Theater Arts (Gothenburg University)

What is your favorite word in your language and why?
"Lagom" for instance, is a Swedish word with no real English translation. I actually don't know if it is my favorite word, but it is the word that best describes the Swedish mentality (oh, I may get some Swedish licorice thrown at me for that). It means "just about right" and can be used in a variety of situations. If someone asks if the temperature is okay, you can always answer "det är lagom", meaning it is just about right. If someone asks how much food you would like, you can answer "lite lagom", a little just about right. If someone asks if the speech was too long, you guessed it, you can answer "lagom långt". Welcome to the world of Swedish, where lagom is king!

What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?
Well, my favorite dish is sushi, which you can get in my hometown, but even though it technically can count as Swedish sushi, it doesn't really count as a Swedish dish. So I would say salmon with boiled potatoes and a cold white sauce with a tinge of caviar.

Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?
Yes, French, Spanish, Danish.
-
What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?
I love reading and hanging out with my kids. Nope, not at the same time.
-
What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?
My hometown is Jönköping in the south of Sweden, right by lake Vättern. I love it because you easily can bike everywhere, and there are plenty of green space, even in the city.
