Tutor Bio
I began my classical training in St. Louis , where I acquired my BFA. I completed my Master of Fine Arts degree at Cal State Fullerton where I received academic scholarships for my work in voice and speech. I received them for my involvement in conducting workshops on various dialects, substitute teaching for my voice professor, and for providing many hours of individual and group coaching with well over 100 students. I currently teach 1 on 1 accent reduction and dialect coaching with the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Strommen. I work with actors trying to neutralize foreign accents and personal regionalisms as well as individuals and business professionals. In 3 years, I have coached over 25 shows, most of which called for a great deal of accent reduction.

What is your favorite word in your language and why?
My favorite word in my language (English) is breath. The voice is merely the exhale made audible, and all dialects, accents, regionalisms and vocal utterances live on the breath. And if one wishes to modify their voice (for a role or for life), one must first start there, with an understanding of the breath.

What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?
Being from San Francisco, I am a sucker for a good loaf of sourdough bread. Whether it’s a bread bowl, into which you put a good clam chowder, or you slather it with butter and garlic and use it to help scoop up a good plate of spaghetti, you’ve got to start with good bread.

Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?
Dialects and accents are my specialty, but for the record, I do converse in Spanish and am always looking for an excuse to get back to Spain, or Costa Rica.

What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?
Love music. My son is a 9-year old guitar whiz and we love to listen together, or he plays for me, and I fanboy out on him. Big fan of comedy too. Used to do stand up with my wife way back, though our house is usually flowing with jokes… when it’s not flowing with music.

What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?
San Francisco is where I was born and raised, but LA really is my home. Beach to the left of me, mountains to the right… great people (maybe not drivers) all around me. How terrific is that?
