I’m an MFA-trained voice and speech coach with over 19 years of experience helping people communicate more clearly and confidently in English, as well as acquire an accent or dialect for performance. Learn more about Sean

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

'Curiosity'. The way the sounds are organized feels like a mini speech journey. There are peaks and valleys in a relatively short amount of time. And, as a value, it's a gift that keeps on giving.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

St. Louis style pizza is generally either loved, or hated. I happen to love it. I've so consistently ordered pizza to eat with my niece and nephews when I visit that they started calling me 'Uncle Pizza.'

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

I am ashamed to say it, but I do not speak any other languages fluently.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

I am an avid hiker, love to camp, I've somewhat recently started mountain biking, and I was a long distance runner for years before a meniscus tear sidelined that hobby. I have a pitbull husky (named 'Gadget') that keeps me active outdoors as well. I love a good trivia night, and spinning some old vinyl while I clean the apartment. I like a podcast that expands my knowledge in unexpected ways, and I frequently press play on Radiolab, Hidden Brain, Louder than a Riot, Throughline, and Invisibilia on my morning dog walks.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

I was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but I mostly grew up an hour outside the city, in a small town called Washington. I love the general willingness to offer a kind 'hello' to a stranger in passing.
