Learn more about Suzanne

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

The word “gun” in Afrikaans (pronounced with a hard guttural ‘g’). This simple word describes the beautiful concept of being genuinely happy for another person; not begrudging them their good fortune, and is the opposite of envy. I have yet to find its equal in any other language.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

We have a traditional meal named “Melkkos” – literally “Milk Food”. It is a type of thickened porridge made with milk that originated from a time when my people fell on hard times during the Anglo Boer war, providing sustenance and protein as a main meal. Nowadays it is served more as a sweet dish with cinnamon and brown sugar.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

I adore the French language but confess that it has never come naturally to me. I first opted to study it as an additional subject in high school, then again more officially at varsity. I have continued to enjoy it recreationally for many years as an adult on Duolingo and have become quite proficient at reading the language, but have yet to enjoy a more submersive speaking experience in it.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

I work at a beautiful wedding and function venue during the weekend and I am currently in the process of writing an Old Testament Bible Commentary. I adore spending time in nature, with children, with Good people and those in need: I am fascinated by all of God’s creation, especially by those created in His image 😉 I enjoy regular exercise and my dog is my Best Friend.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

Johannesburg, South Africa. Often hailed ‘The New York of Africa’ this cosmopolitan, ever-evolving, dynamic beacon of Hope is as much a part of me as I am of it. I am deeply grateful to have been Planted here.
