Learn more about Sylvana

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

Having grown up in a multilingual environment, I've always felt that more than one language is "my language." I learned English, Italian, and Spanish simultaneously before the age of three, and later learned French in school, eventually teaching it professionally. A few favorite expressions are: • Italian: Sempre avanti — always forward. It reflects resilience, growth, and continuing to move ahead in life. • English / Latin expression commonly used in English: Carpe Diem — seize the day. A reminder to live fully and make the most of each opportunity. • Spanish: Ojalá — meaning "hopefully" or "if only." I love that it expresses hope and possibility in a single word. • French: Retrouvailles — the joy of reconnecting after time apart. It beautifully captures warmth, emotion, and human connection. Each language carries its own beauty and perspective, which is one of the reasons I love teaching languages.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

My favorite dish from Montevideo is asado / parrillada — a traditional barbecue cooked over hot coals and shared with family and friends. There are restaurants in the Toronto area that serve it, but for me the best version is homemade and enjoyed when I gather with my South American friends, who have become like family.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

Yes, languages are a natural part of my daily life. I speak Italian every day with my mother, French with my children, Spanish with my South American extended family and friends, and English daily in both professional and personal settings. I am also currently learning Portuguese, which I find to be a beautiful language. Its similarities to Spanish make it especially enjoyable to study.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

My interests are creative, active, and wide-ranging. I enjoy watercolor painting, refinishing antique furniture, and designing hand-painted greeting cards. I also love cooking and experimenting with different cuisines, including Thai, Italian, Spanish, and seafood dishes. Staying active is important to me, so I enjoy walking and hiking with my dog, swimming, exercising, and weight training. I also enjoy board games, creative writing, reading, and attending plays, musicals, concerts, and museums. Most of all, I value spending quality time with my family.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

I consider Toronto my hometown, as it is where I have lived for most of my life. I love Toronto for its multicultural energy, diversity, and endless opportunities to learn and experience new things. It is a city where people from many backgrounds come together, and there is always something happening — great food, arts, culture, festivals, and inspiring communities. Its international spirit reflects many of the values I appreciate most: curiosity, openness, and connection.
