What is your favorite word in your language and why?
My favorite word in Chinese is “缘分” (yuánfèn). It expresses the beautiful idea of a destined connection between people — something beyond coincidence, rooted in timing, harmony, and shared experience. As a language teacher for over 17 years, I’ve met students from all over the world. Many of these encounters have felt like “缘分” — not just teacher and student, but meaningful human connections that go beyond the classroom. This word reminds me that every learner who enters my life is part of a journey I am meant to share. It captures the spirit of cultural exchange, trust, and mutual growth that makes teaching so rewarding.

What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?
My favorite dish from my hometown is 红烧肉 (hóng shāo ròu) — a rich, flavorful braised pork belly dish that’s deeply comforting and full of nostalgic warmth. It reminds me of family gatherings and holiday celebrations back home in China. The slow cooking, the savory-sweet sauce, and the tender texture bring back memories of my childhood kitchen. Now that I live in the Bay Area, I’m happy to say there are some great local restaurants that serve authentic versions of 红烧肉. One of my favorites is China Village in Albany, where the flavors are very close to what I remember. Although no restaurant can completely match the taste of home, this dish still makes me feel connected to my roots and brings a sense of joy and belonging every time I enjoy it.

Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?
Yes, in addition to teaching Chinese, I have studied and spoken English for many years, especially since moving to the United States. I also studied Japanese for a time, which helped deepen my understanding of how East Asian languages compare in structure and culture. I enjoy learning new languages because it gives me insight into different ways of thinking and communicating. Language is more than just vocabulary—it's a window into how people live and connect. As a language teacher, I believe that continuing to study other languages makes me more empathetic and effective in helping my own students succeed.

What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?
Outside of teaching, I enjoy writing short stories, especially those that reflect cultural themes or moments from everyday life. Storytelling helps me connect language with emotion and imagination, which also enhances how I teach. I also love Chinese calligraphy—it’s a meditative art form that deepens my appreciation for the beauty and history of the language. In my free time, I like exploring the Bay Area, visiting museums, attending cultural events, and spending time with family. These activities not only refresh me but also inspire new ideas to bring into the classroom.

What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?
I consider Beijing my hometown. It is a city rich in both history and culture, where ancient traditions and modern life exist side by side. I love Beijing for its deep cultural roots—its temples, hutongs, palaces, and its beautiful seasonal changes. It's a place where the language I teach comes alive in daily life, where every corner tells a story. I also love the food, the arts, and the strong sense of identity people carry. Even though I now live in the Bay Area, Beijing is the foundation of who I am as a teacher and a storyteller.
