Why Nepali?

Four reasons to take Nepali classes

Trek the Himalayas Like a Local

Nepal is home to eight of the world's ten tallest mountains. Speaking Nepali transforms trekking from a guided tour into genuine encounters with mountain communities.

Gateway to Hindi and Sanskrit

Nepali uses the Devanagari script and shares deep roots with Hindi. Learning Nepali gives you a strong foundation for the entire Indo-Aryan language family.

Connect With a Growing Diaspora

Nepali communities have grown rapidly in the US, UK, and Australia. Speaking Nepali connects you to one of the fastest-growing immigrant communities in the English-speaking world.

Support Meaningful Development Work

Nepal is a major focus for international development organizations. Nepali fluency makes aid work, research, and community partnerships dramatically more effective.

Nepali in Los Angeles

Nepali is spoken by about 25 million people as a first language and another 15 million as a second, primarily in Nepal and parts of India, Bhutan, and Myanmar. It is an Indo-Aryan language, closely related to Hindi and Urdu, written in the Devanagari script. Speakers of Hindi will recognize a lot of vocabulary, but the grammar diverges in important ways: Nepali has its own verb forms, honorific system, and pronunciation patterns. The language operates on three levels of formality (low, mid, high), and using the wrong one can sound rude or oddly servile depending on the social situation.

The Nepali-American community in LA is small but growing, with concentrations in the South Bay and parts of the San Gabriel Valley. Many of our Nepali students are heritage speakers whose parents came from Kathmandu, Pokhara, or the eastern hill districts, kids who understand the language but never learned to read or write it. Others are travelers preparing for treks in the Annapurna or Everest region, NGO workers heading to Nepal, or development professionals working in the region. There is also a steady stream of students drawn to Nepali through Buddhist or Hindu studies who want to read texts in the original.

Strommen has been matching students with private Nepali tutors in Los Angeles since 2006. Our tutors are native speakers from Nepal who can teach the standard Kathmandu dialect or work with regional variations your family spoke. Nepali rewards consistent practice more than memorization, and a good tutor keeps you talking from the first lesson. Whether you are preparing for a long trip, reconnecting with relatives, or studying Newar Buddhism in the original sources, your tutor designs every session around your goals.

Nepali class FAQ

What is the best way to learn Nepali?

Regular conversation with a native Nepali speaker is the most effective method. Nepali's honorific system — where verb forms and even common words change depending on the formality of the situation — is almost impossible to learn from a book. You need a native speaker to explain when and why you'd use a particular form. Learning Devanagari script early is also important; it's not as hard as it looks and typically takes a couple of weeks to get comfortable with. Between lessons, Nepali music and YouTube channels aimed at learners can help reinforce what you've studied.

How long does it take to learn Nepali?

Nepali is generally considered moderately difficult for English speakers, comparable to Hindi. With regular lessons, most students can manage basic conversations in 4 to 6 months. Learning the Devanagari script adds some time upfront but pays off quickly. If you already speak Hindi or another Indo-Aryan language, you'll progress significantly faster due to shared vocabulary and similar grammar structures. Full working proficiency typically takes 1 to 2 years of consistent study.

Is Nepali hard for English speakers?

It's in the middle range. The Devanagari script takes some getting used to, and the verb conjugation system is more complex than English, with different forms for tense, gender, and politeness level. Word order is subject-object-verb, which takes adjustment. On the positive side, Nepali pronunciation is consistent and phonetic once you learn the script, and there are more English loanwords in modern Nepali than you might expect. The hardest part for most learners is mastering the social registers — knowing when to use formal vs. informal language.

Can I take Nepali classes online?

Yes. All Nepali lessons are available online via video call. Nepali is not widely taught in the US, so online lessons give you access to qualified native-speaking tutors that you're unlikely to find at a local language school. Our tutors can share their screen for Devanagari writing practice, and the conversational focus of our lessons works just as well over video as in person.
