German and English are cousins. The grammar has rules (lots of them), but the vocabulary overlap gives English speakers a real head start.

Strommen has been matching students with private German tutors in Los Angeles since 2006. We run private lessons and group classes for all levels, including beginner German, business German, German conversation, and German for the entertainment industry. German is the most widely spoken native language in the European Union, and LA has a surprisingly active German-speaking community.
The German presence in LA centers around the Westside and the Valley. The Goethe-Institut in Beverly Hills runs cultural programs, and German businesses have a significant footprint in the entertainment, automotive, and tech sectors. Many of our students learn German for business with companies headquartered in Munich, Berlin, or Frankfurt, or for graduate school where German-language research is required. We also work with families preparing for relocations and partners of German nationals living in LA.
Our German dialect coaches have worked on major film productions, including coaching Sacha Baron Cohen for Bruno and providing German language work for productions across Netflix, Amazon, and Apple TV. That precision carries into private lessons. How long does it take to learn German?
German is Category II for English speakers — harder than Spanish but easier than Mandarin. Most students reach conversational ability in 6 to 9 months with regular lessons. The grammar has more rules than Romance languages but is very logical.
Is German hard for English speakers?
The grammar is the main challenge — four cases, three genders, and word order rules. But German vocabulary overlaps heavily with English (both are Germanic languages), and pronunciation is consistent. Most students find the first few months steep, then it levels off.
