Why Croatian?

Four reasons to take Croatian classes

The Dalmatian Coast

Split, Hvar, Dubrovnik. Grilled octopus and pre-dawn beach walks. Croatian gets you past the tourist version.

Game of Thrones fandom

King's Landing is Dubrovnik. Walk the walls, practice with the guide, and order in Croatian at the restaurant after.

Heritage & family

Reconnecting with grandparents from Zagreb, Rijeka, or the islands. Understanding the stories they only tell in Croatian.

Easier than you think

Phonetic spelling, no articles, and you already know "cravat" comes from "Croat." Seven cases sound scary but they click fast.

Croatian in Los Angeles

Croatian is a South Slavic language spoken by about 5.5 million people, primarily in Croatia and parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It uses the Latin alphabet exclusively, with a handful of diacritical marks (č, ć, š, ž, đ) that each represent a single, consistent sound. The grammar is heavily inflected: seven grammatical cases, three genders, and verbs that change form depending on aspect. Pronunciation is phonetic, which sounds like a relief until you try to say something like “hrvatski” with the rolled R cluster up front. Most of our American students find the writing system easier than expected and the case system harder.

Los Angeles has a small but tightly connected Croatian-American community, with roots going back to the fishing and longshoring families of San Pedro. The Croatian Cultural Center on the harbor still hosts events, and Croatian-American businesses dot the South Bay. We also see a steady stream of students with Croatian heritage who grew up hearing the language at family gatherings but never spoke it themselves, plus travelers who fell in love with Hvar or Dubrovnik and decided they wanted to come back able to order coffee in Croatian.

Strommen has been matching students with private Croatian tutors in Los Angeles since 2006. Our tutors are native speakers from Zagreb, Split, and Rijeka who can teach the Štokavian standard or work with the regional dialect your family spoke. Most of our Croatian students take private lessons one on one rather than group classes, since the LA Croatian-learning population is small and tightly specialized. Whether you are reconnecting with a baka who never quite taught you, getting ready for a research trip to Pula, or planning to bring your kids to meet relatives, your tutor designs every lesson around what you actually need.

“I can actually talk to my baka now. Not just the basics — real conversations about her life, things she never told us in English. Worth every hour.”

Croatian class FAQ

What is the best way to learn Croatian?

Talking with a native speaker, regularly. Croatian has seven grammatical cases and three genders. That looks like a lot on paper, but it clicks faster in conversation than it does from a grammar chart. A tutor who knows what you are interested in will build lessons around those topics, which makes a real difference in how quickly you progress.

How long does it take to learn Croatian?

With two or three private hours a week, most students reach a solid conversational level in 6 to 12 months. If you already speak another Slavic language or grew up hearing Croatian at home, it goes faster.

Is Croatian hard for English speakers?

The case system is the biggest adjustment. English does not have noun cases, so it takes some getting used to. On the other hand, Croatian spelling is almost perfectly phonetic. Most students say the grammar feels hard at first and then gradually stops being a problem.

Can I take Croatian classes online?

Yes. A lot of our Croatian tutors teach over Zoom or Google Meet. It works well, especially for students with family in Croatia who want a schedule that lines up across time zones.
