Why Polish?
Four reasons to take Polish classes
Gateway to All Slavic Languages
Polish grammar is among the most complex in the Slavic family. Master it, and Czech, Slovak, and other Slavic languages become dramatically easier.
Connect With a 40-Million-Strong Diaspora
Polish communities thrive in Chicago, London, and across the EU. Speaking Polish opens social and professional networks that English can't reach.
Explore Poland's Tech and Startup Boom
Poland is Central Europe's fastest-growing economy and a major outsourcing hub for tech. Polish-speaking professionals stand out in a crowded market.
Experience Nobel-Winning Literature
Poland has produced five Nobel laureates in literature, including Wisława Szymborska and Olga Tokarczuk. Their work in Polish is sharper, funnier, and more musical than any translation.

Polish in Los Angeles
Polish is spoken by 45 million people, primarily in Poland, with significant diaspora communities in the United States, the UK, and Germany. It is a Slavic language related to Czech, Slovak, and Russian, and it has a well-earned reputation for difficulty. Polish uses seven grammatical cases, which means most nouns, adjectives, and pronouns change form depending on their role in a sentence. Pronunciation includes consonant clusters that look impossible (“szczęście” means happiness) but follow consistent rules once you learn the diagraphs. The alphabet is Latin with diacritics: ą, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, ż, each with its own sound. Polish people are warm and patient with learners, but they will absolutely test your case endings.
The Polish-American community in LA is smaller than in Chicago or New York but has deep roots, with cultural anchors like the Polish American Congress and the Polish Music Center at USC. Strommen’s Polish work has a high-profile entertainment connection: our coaches worked on the Polish-language film Teen Spirit, coaching Elle Fanning’s Polish accent throughout the production. That kind of precision-pronunciation work is part of how we approach every lesson. Many of our Polish students are heritage speakers reconnecting with grandparents’ language, professionals with Polish business contacts (Warsaw and Kraków have become major European tech and finance hubs), or partners and spouses of Polish-Americans.
Strommen has been matching students with private Polish tutors in Los Angeles since 2014. Our tutors are native speakers from Warsaw, Kraków, and other Polish cities who can teach the standard literary Polish or the casual register your family used at home. Polish rewards patience: cases feel paralyzing for the first months and then suddenly click. Lessons are one on one, online or in person, and your tutor builds every session around what you actually need.
No public Polish group classes right now — but we can set up a semi-private class for your family, friends, or company with as few as two people. Get in touch.
Polish class FAQ
What is the best way to learn Polish?
One-on-one practice with a native speaker who can correct your case endings and pronunciation in real time. Polish grammar has a lot of moving parts — seven cases, gendered nouns, aspect-based verbs — and the only way to internalize them is through repeated conversation, not memorization. A tutor helps you focus on the patterns that matter most at your level and keeps you from getting overwhelmed by rules you don't need yet.
How long does it take to learn Polish?
The State Department classifies Polish as Category IV, estimating 1,100 class hours for professional proficiency. Conversational Polish is reachable sooner — most students with consistent weekly lessons can manage everyday interactions within 8-12 months. The case system is the biggest time investment; once you get comfortable with it, progress accelerates.
Is Polish hard for English speakers?
Yes, it's one of the harder European languages. The seven grammatical cases mean that nearly every noun and adjective changes form depending on context. Pronunciation includes sounds like 'sz,' 'cz,' 'rz,' and nasal vowels that require practice. The good news: Polish is phonetically regular (no spelling surprises), verb tenses are simpler than in English, and the vocabulary has absorbed a lot of Latin and French words that feel familiar.
Can I take Polish classes online?
Yes. Our Polish tutors teach online via video call, which is how most of our Polish students take lessons — native Polish speakers are less common in LA than tutors for Spanish or French, so online access removes the geography problem entirely. You get the same tutor each week, with lessons tailored to your level and goals, whether that's business Polish, family communication, or general fluency.
