Tutor Bio
¡Hola! Soy Emilio, a certified Spanish teacher born and raised in Ecuador. I have experience in university-level teaching and multicultural learning environments, which has allowed me to adapt my classes to students of different backgrounds, ages, and learning styles.
Before dedicating myself fully to teaching, my background in Business Management and Marketing gave me the opportunity to study and live abroad. During that time, I gained valuable experience working in multicultural and educational settings that focused on supporting and connecting people through learning. Those experiences taught me the value of diversity and how language can bring people and cultures together.
In the classroom, my teaching approach is fully student-centered. I focus on understanding each learner’s goals, interests, and learning style to create personalized lessons that fit their needs. My priority is to build a safe, supportive environment where students feel confident to participate and make mistakes without fear. In my classes, learning happens through real contexts and meaningful activities, using communication as the core of every lesson.
Outside of teaching, I’m a laid-back and easygoing person who enjoys a balanced lifestyle. I’m very passionate about music and enjoy exploring geography and different cultures. I practice mixed martial arts to stay active and disciplined, and in my free time I like playing the bass, solving puzzles, and going to live music events. I’m very family-oriented and truly value family time, and I also appreciate my alone time and just doing things on my own to recharge :)

What is your favorite word in your language and why?
My favorite word in Spanish is “lámpara.” Literally, it means lamp (?), but in my city, Guayaquil, it’s a slang expression we use all the time to show surprise or shock — like saying “Wow!” or “Oh my God!” For example, if there’s a big car crash on the street, or an underdog team beats the favorite, someone from Guayaquil could say: “¡Qué lámpara!” to express surprise. I love this word because it feels very local, very “us.” When I lived abroad, I kept using it — even in English conversations! It became kind of my trademark word. My international friends — from Sweden, the U.S., the Middle East, and Latin America — loved it so much that they started using it too! It made me happy to see a little piece of my city’s slang travel around the world.

What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?
My favorite dish from my hometown is bolón de verde con queso y chicharrón — and yes, I’m actually eating one right now while answering this question! It’s a traditional coastal Ecuadorian dish made from fried green plantains that are mashed and mixed with lots of cheese and chicharrón (fried pork). The mix is shaped into a ball — that’s why it’s called bolón, which comes from bola (ball in Spanish). It’s one of the most popular breakfast dishes in Guayaquil, and if you add a fried egg on top, it’s just perfect!

Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?
Besides Spanish, I teach English at the university level and I’m fluent in it. I also speak a bit of Portuguese and I’d say I’m at a basic level for now.

What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?
Outside of teaching, you’ll probably find me playing my bass or listening to music — I’m really passionate about it. I also enjoy going for walks, being in nature, and having a drink to relax after work. I practice mixed martial arts to stay active and disciplined, and I love spending time with my family whenever I can. I’m a pretty easygoing person, and I really value those quiet moments when I can just recharge and enjoy simple things.

What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?
I definitely consider my grandparents’ house my hometown. That’s where I grew up — I lived there my whole life with my mom, my aunt, and my grandparents until I left for university. In Ecuador, it’s very common for families to gather at their grandparents’ house every weekend, and for me, that was my everyday life. All my best memories — birthdays, meals, celebrations, and long afternoons together — happened there. Even today, it’s still the place where everyone meets, so to me, that house will always feel like home.
