Learn more about Cynthia

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

My favorite word in Italian? It has to be “magari.” It’s one of those untranslatable gems — a single word packed with hope, desire, and possibility. Depending on the context, it can mean “I wish,” “maybe,” or “if only!” It reflects the poetic, expressive heart of Italian culture — where feelings are often more important than facts. I love how “magari” captures that beautiful space between dreaming and reality. It’s a word full of emotion, and when students learn to use it, I always see a little spark of joy. It’s more than just vocabulary — it’s a glimpse into the Italian soul.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

That’s a tough one — Rome is full of incredible food — but if I had to choose, I’d say a classic "cacio e pepe" or "amatriciana" always wins my heart. Simple ingredients, bold flavors — pure Roman magic on a plate! And if you're ever in Rome and want to taste the real thing, please go to Antica Pesa, on Via Garibaldi 18 in Trastevere — it’s a historic spot with a charming atmosphere and unforgettable dishes. Or head to Perill, in Testaccio — another neighborhood treasure where Roman tradition lives on in every bite.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

I studied Russian and French and I speak perfectly English

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

Outside of teaching at Strommen, I’m passionate about photography, especially nature, but I also love to draw and paint. Art, in all its forms, inspires me and keeps my creative spirit alive. Music is another big part of my life; whether listening or playing, it adds rhythm and joy to my days. These interests fuel my teaching, bringing color and harmony

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

my heart belongs to Rome, where I grew up surrounded by art, history, and vibrant street life. Rome isn’t just a city to me — it’s a living, breathing place full of stories, flavors, and colors that shape who I am. Why do I love it? Because every corner holds a surprise: from ancient ruins to bustling piazzas, from the scent of fresh espresso to laughter echoing through narrow alleys. Rome taught me to appreciate beauty in everyday moments and to live life with passion and curiosity, lessons I share with my students every day.
