Learn more about Jamila

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

My favorite word in Moroccan Arabic is "Baraka" (بركة). It means blessing, abundance, and goodness. I like this word because it reflects gratitude, positivity, and the importance of appreciating what we have. It is a meaningful word that is deeply connected to Moroccan culture and everyday life.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

My favorite dish from my hometown is couscous. It is a traditional Moroccan dish made with steamed semolina, vegetables, and meat. It is usually prepared on Fridays and during family gatherings. Although I still live in Morocco, many local restaurants serve it, and it remains one of the most popular dishes in the country.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

Besides the languages I teach, I also speak some English and French. I enjoy communicating with people from different cultures, and learning languages helps me better understand the experiences of language learners.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

Outside of teaching at Strommen, I enjoy reading novels, especially those that explore social issues and different cultures. I also enjoy baking and trying new dessert recipes. These hobbies help me stay creative, relaxed, and inspired.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

I consider Morocco my hometown because it is the country where I was born and raised. I love Morocco for its rich culture, diverse traditions, beautiful landscapes, and warm hospitality. From the mountains to the beaches and historic cities, every region has something unique to offer. I am especially proud of our culture, cuisine, and the strong sense of community that brings people together.
