What homeschool ASL lessons look like

Lessons are one-on-one, or two siblings together, and the tutor adjusts to your child's age.

Little kids

The alphabet, their own name in fingerspelling, and signs for family, food, animals, and feelings. Lots of games.

Teens taking it for credit

A structured ASL 1 or ASL 2 sequence with a textbook and progress notes your supervising teacher can use for the transcript.

Families with a Deaf relative

For kids who want to talk with a grandparent, cousin, or classmate. The tutor teaches the signs your family actually uses.

Deaf culture

Tutors also cover Deaf etiquette and history: how to get someone's attention, why facial expression is grammar, and what a name sign is.

Online or in person

ASL works well over video as long as the camera shows your child from the waist up. In-person lessons are available in the Los Angeles area.

Paying with California charter funds

If your child attends an independent-study charter, your instructional funds can usually cover ASL lessons. The charter pays us directly once it approves us as a vendor and issues a purchase order. We walk you through it.

How charter funding works

Questions parents ask

What age can my child start ASL?

Babies pick up simple signs before they can talk, so there's no real minimum. For private lessons, most kids are ready around four or five, when they can sit with a tutor for 30 minutes.

Can my child really learn a signed language over video?

Yes. Deaf people have used video calls to sign with each other for years. The two things that matter are lighting and framing. Sit facing a window or a lamp, and set the laptop back far enough that both hands and the face are in the picture.

Does ASL count as a high school world language?

Usually. Many California high schools and charters accept ASL for the world language requirement, and the University of California accepts it too. Your charter decides how credit is awarded, so confirm with your supervising teacher before you start.

Can siblings learn together?

Yes, and ASL is one of the best languages for it, because kids practice with each other between lessons. We'll tell you if their ages are too far apart to share a tutor.

Are your ASL tutors Deaf?

Ask us about any tutor's background. If having a Deaf tutor matters to your family, say so, and we'll tell you honestly who's available.

Ready to start signing?

Tell us your child's age and what they want to learn, and we'll match them with an ASL tutor.
