5 Spanish phrases you'll hear all over LA
Everyday Spanish in LA leans Mexican and Chicano, with plenty of English mixed in. These five come up all the time.
-
01
Simón
Slang for "yeah," usually explained as a pun that stretches sí into the name Simón. For "nope," say nel. Both are everyday slang in Mexico and Chicano LA, so keep them for casual talk.
e.g. ¿Vas al partido el sábado? Simón.
-
02
¡Aguas!
"Watch out!" Literally "waters." The usual story, never proven, traces it to ¡agua va!, the warning shouted before dirty water went out a window. Handy from the passenger seat in LA traffic.
e.g. ¡Aguas con la bici!
-
03
Chamba
Work, or a job. Common across Mexico and much of Latin America. The verb is chambear.
e.g. No puedo el lunes, tengo mucha chamba.
-
04
La troca
The truck, borrowed from English and given a Spanish ending. Everyday in US Spanish and across northern Mexico. Same family as parquear (to park) and la marketa (the market).
e.g. Súbete a la troca, vamos a la marketa.
-
05
¡Órale pues!
"Alright then!" Use it to agree to a plan or to send someone off. Órale on its own can also mean "come on" or "wow," depending on the tone.
e.g. Nos vemos a las ocho. ¡Órale pues!
About Spanish
Learning Spanish in Los Angeles
Close to four in ten people in LA County speak Spanish at home (the numbers are in our post on LA's languages). Learn it here and you can use it the same afternoon. Order al pastor on Eagle Rock Boulevard in Spanish, or finally say more than hola to the neighbor who waves every morning.
Most of that Spanish is Mexican, though Pico-Union and Westlake have big Salvadoran and Guatemalan communities. For most learners here, Mexican Spanish is the one to aim for. That doesn't mean you need a tutor from Mexico. The tutors on this page come from all over, and they all live in LA now. Any standard Spanish will get you understood across the city. The differences are mostly accent and vocabulary, plus a little grammar. Vosotros, for instance, the informal "you all" used in most of Spain, is rare in LA. If you want Mexican Spanish specifically, tell us and we'll point you to the right tutor, or browse our Mexican Spanish tutors. For the rest of Latin America, see our Latin American Spanish tutors, and if you're still deciding, we wrote up how Spain's Spanish differs from Mexico's.
Strommen isn't a marketplace. "I started Strommen with a Craigslist ad in 2006," says founder Garrett Strommen. "Twenty years later, I still personally meet every tutor in our network before they teach for us." Several of the tutors above offer lessons at your home or office, and we think a weekly hour face to face is the best thing you can do for your speaking. A tutor across the table hears where your pronunciation drifts and fixes it on the spot. Online lessons are there for busy weeks and travel.
Plenty of students come to us with a deadline, like a trip to Mexico City or in-laws who'd love to hear them try. Your tutor can plan the lessons around that date. If you'd rather learn with other people, our Spanish classes in Los Angeles run all year, online and in person.
What you'll cover
Lessons & classes tailored to Spanish
In-person lessons in LA
The tutors here are based mostly around Hollywood, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, and Highland Park. Some have you over to their place, and some travel to your home or office, usually for a higher rate. You can meet in person most weeks and switch to online when the week gets away from you.
For heritage speakers
If you understand your abuela perfectly but can't get the words out when it's your turn, you're not a beginner, and your lessons shouldn't treat you like one. Your tutor starts with what you already know and gets you saying it out loud.
Spanish for work
A nurse doing patient intake and a foreman running a crew need very different Spanish. Tell your tutor what your workweek sounds like and they'll build the lessons around it. For actors, Strommen has Spanish dialect coaches who work on film and TV sets. If your workplace wants to train a team, ask us about corporate classes.
Kids, school, and AP Spanish
Several tutors here take younger students. If your child is in a dual-language program, tell the tutor what the class is covering and they'll work alongside it. You'll find more options among our Spanish tutors for kids, and for the AP exam, see our AP Spanish tutors.
FAQ
About Spanish lessons & classes
Do your Spanish tutors really teach in person in Los Angeles?
Yes. Every tutor on this page lives in Los Angeles, and most of them teach face to face, at their place or yours. If you need someone to come to you, tell us your neighborhood and we'll help you find a tutor who travels there.
What does a Spanish tutor in Los Angeles cost?
Each tutor sets their own rates. In-person lessons usually cost more than online, and even more if your tutor travels to you. The price on each card is a starting rate, usually what you'd pay per hour on a 20-hour package. The card's "see all rates" link shows single lessons and everything else.
Which Spanish will I learn: Mexican, Castilian, or something else?
Your tutor's accent tends to rub off on you, so part of the answer is who you pick. In LA, Mexican Spanish is the sensible default, because most of the city's Spanish speakers use it. Whichever variety you learn, Spanish speakers from other countries will understand you. If you have a specific target, say family in El Salvador or a move to Madrid, tell your tutor up front and they'll aim for it. Or we can match you with one of our Mexican Spanish or Latin American Spanish specialists.
I understand Spanish but can't really speak it. Where do I start?
Tell your tutor at your first lesson, because it changes the plan. You'll skip the hola, me llamo stage and go straight to getting what's already in your head out of your mouth, with lots of speaking practice and no judgment about the Spanglish.
Private lessons or group classes: which should I pick?
Private lessons move faster and fit around your schedule, so they're the better pick for a specific goal or an unpredictable week. Group classes cost less per hour, and you get classmates to be wrong in front of. Our Spanish classes in Los Angeles page lists the current groups. You can also do both, with a weekly class plus a private lesson when you need one.
How long until I can hold a conversation?
For most students starting from scratch, a few months of weekly lessons, plus practice in between, is enough to order food and get through a family dinner. LA makes the practice part easier, since Spanish is all around you. After a lesson or two, ask your tutor for a realistic estimate based on where you're starting and how much time you can put in.
Can I try a tutor before I commit?
Yes. Some tutors offer a free 30-minute meet & greet; look for "Book free trial" on their card. Everyone else offers a paid 30-minute trial session at half their online hourly rate, or you can go straight to a 1-hour lesson. If you can't decide, ask us to recommend someone.
