Strommen is a founder-led language school, based in LA since 2006. The French tutors below live in or near LA too, from Van Nuys down to Palos Verdes. We vet our tutors personally before they start teaching for us.
Some of them offer a free 30-minute meet & greet, and their cards show a "Book free trial" button. We're also happy to choose for you: tell us what you want French for.
Each card opens to the tutor's bio and open times. Prices on the cards are starting rates, typically the hourly cost of an online package, and "see all rates" lists the rest.

5 bits of French worth learning early
Spoken French runs on little words and set phrases that verb charts leave out. Here are five you'll hear every day.
-
01
Du coup
"So" or "as a result." It turns up so often in spoken French that the French themselves call it a tic de langage. Use it to link two sentences and you'll sound a lot less like a textbook.
e.g. Il pleuvait, du coup on est restés à la maison.
-
02
Ça marche
"That works" or "deal." Say it when someone proposes a time, and expect to hear it from a waiter taking your order. Marcher means "to walk," but it also means "to work," the way a machine runs or a plan comes together.
e.g. On se voit à 18h ? Ça marche.
-
03
Bof
"Meh." A one-word shrug, somewhere between "not really" and "I don't much care." It often comes with an actual shrug.
e.g. Le film était bien ? Bof.
-
04
C'est parti
"Here we go!" or "let's go!" It's what you say once everyone's ready and something finally gets started. Parti comes from partir, "to leave."
e.g. Tout le monde est prêt ? C'est parti !
-
05
Coucou
A warm, familiar "hi there" for friends and family, and a common way to open a text message. It's also French for "cuckoo."
e.g. Coucou, tu es dispo ce week-end ?
About French
The French side of LA
Los Angeles has its own French community, expats from France and families from francophone West Africa among them. There are French immersion schools here, too. You don't need a trip to Paris to start speaking French.
Most of the tutors listed above live in the city of Los Angeles, many of them between Hollywood and Downtown. The rest live nearby, in Culver City and the South Bay. Some grew up with French in places as far apart as Brittany and Alexandria, Egypt. Several teach in person. Most also teach online, so if you travel a lot you can keep the same tutor and switch to video while you're away. However you meet, ask your tutor to stop you whenever your tu slides into tout. English speakers keep making that slip until someone catches it.
Some of our French students are parents trying to follow a kid's immersion-school homework. Others grew up hearing French from family and want it back. A few have a move to Paris or Geneva coming up, or a DELF exam on the calendar (that's what our DELF test preparation tutors are for). Tell your tutor which group you're in, and the first lesson starts there.
French is hard to learn from a book alone. The spelling is full of silent letters, and the French that people actually speak is a long way from the textbook.
Our French classes in Los Angeles are the group option. They run online throughout the year, with an occasional in-person cohort in Hollywood.
What you'll cover
Lessons & classes tailored to French
In person, at home or at work
The tutors who teach in person are based around Hollywood, Los Feliz, Highland Park, and Downtown, and out in Van Nuys and Culver City. Most of them will come to your home or office, or you can go to them for a lower rate. Each profile lists a separate rate for going to them, for your place, and for online, so you can compare before you book.
French for kids & their parents
Immersion school is a lot for a kid whose family doesn't speak French at home. Tutors help kids catch up or keep pace, and parents who want to follow along can take lessons of their own. Our French tutors for kids page lists more teachers who work with children.
Conversation & pronunciation
If you took French in school, you probably understand more than you can say. These lessons are mostly talking, with work on the sounds that trip up English speakers, like the French r and the nasal vowels that tell vin, vent, and vont apart. Your tutor can correct you as you go and give you things to listen to between lessons.
Exam prep & big moves
You can prep for the DELF with a tutor who knows the exam, and high schoolers aiming for the AP exam can work with one of our AP French tutors. Lessons can also work backward from a moving date, for anyone relocating to a French-speaking city for work or school.
FAQ
About French lessons & classes
Can I take French lessons in person in LA?
Yes. Several of these tutors teach in person, either coming to you or meeting you near them. All of them live in or near LA, though a few teach only online, so check the profile before you book.
Can a French tutor come to my home or office in LA?
Yes. Most of the tutors here who teach in person will also come to you, at home or at work. It costs more than going to the tutor, and each card's "see all rates" link shows both. Not sure who's closest? Tell us your neighborhood and we'll suggest someone.
How do I find a French tutor near me in LA?
The list above has our French tutors in Los Angeles and within about 25 miles, and each card says where the tutor is based. For a map of everyone, try tutors near me.
How much do French lessons in LA cost?
Our tutors set their own rates, so prices vary. The "see all rates" link on each card lists single lessons, packages, and in-person prices. Lessons in person usually run higher than online ones, and highest when the tutor comes to you. A paid 30-minute trial session costs half the tutor's one-hour online rate.
Are your tutors native French speakers?
About half of the tutors on this page grew up speaking French, most of them in France. Native speaker or not, a tutor has to pass the same vetting to teach for us. For a Parisian accent specifically, our Parisian French tutors page narrows it down.
Can you help my child keep up at a French immersion school?
Yes. Share recent homework with the tutor, and the lessons can follow the class week by week. Parents can book lessons for themselves, too.
I studied French years ago. Do I have to start over?
Probably not. French you haven't used in years tends to come back quickly. In your first session, your tutor figures out where you are, which is often further along than you'd guess, and builds from there, mostly through conversation.
Should I take private lessons or join a French class?
It mostly comes down to pace and price. A private lesson follows your goal, so it's the quicker route to something specific like the DELF or a move abroad. A group class is cheaper by the hour and gives you other learners to talk to. Our French group classes page shows what's running now, and you can always add a private lesson on the side.
How do I get started?
Pick a tutor and book from their card. If the tutor offers a free 30-minute meet & greet, the button says "Book free trial." Otherwise it says "Check availability," and you can book a paid 30-minute trial session or a 1-hour lesson. Or send us a note about your goals and schedule and we'll suggest a tutor.
