Homeschool Charters • California
Language lessons your homeschool charter can pay for
Private lessons in 50+ languages for California families in independent-study charter schools. Tell us which charter your child attends. We handle the vendor paperwork so your instructional funds can cover the lessons.
What homeschool families use us for
One tutor and your child, or two siblings together. Lessons get planned around what your kid actually likes.
World languages
Spanish, French, Mandarin, Japanese, German, Italian, Korean, and 40+ more, taught by native or near-native speakers.
Young learners
Songs and games for kids as young as five. Lessons are short enough that a seven-year-old keeps talking instead of fidgeting.
High school world language
Structured coursework that follows a textbook and level plan, so your supervising teacher has what they need to assign credit.
Heritage languages
For kids who understand Grandma's Armenian, Tagalog, or Farsi but answer in English. We get them speaking it.
ASL and Latin
American Sign Language taught by fluent signers, and classical Latin for families working through a classical curriculum.
How charter funding works with Strommen
The charter pays us directly. You don't pay up front and wait for a reimbursement.
Tell us your charter and your child
Send us the school's name, your child's age and level, and the language. We match a tutor who fits.
Request us as a vendor
If we aren't on your charter's vendor list yet, ask your Education Specialist or supervising teacher to add us. Most charters let families sponsor a new provider.
We send the paperwork
The charter's vendor team gets our W-9 and the other vendor documents they ask for from us directly. You don't have to chase anything.
The charter issues a purchase order
You request the lessons through your charter's usual process, and the school sends us a purchase order (some call it an enrichment certificate). Charter-funded lessons start after that arrives.
Lessons begin, and we invoice the charter
Online from anywhere in California, or in person in the Los Angeles area, with one of our California-based tutors. We bill the school for the hours your child takes.
We aren't a marketplace. Every tutor is interviewed and placed by our office, and we stay involved after the first lesson. If the fit isn't right, we find your child a different tutor at no cost to you.
Why a live tutor beats another app
Most homeschool families have already tried the apps. Kids collect streaks and badges, and a year later they still freeze when someone asks them a question. The apps are fine for vocabulary. Speaking is a different skill. A kid has to hear a real question, fumble through an answer, and try again with someone patient on the other end.
A tutor can also bend the lesson around your child. If your nine-year-old is obsessed with Minecraft, the lesson can be about building a house. A teenager who needs a course for a transcript gets a textbook, a level plan, and progress notes the supervising teacher can use. And two siblings can share a lesson, which stretches your instructional funds further.
Frequently asked questions
Can charter school instructional funds pay for language lessons?
At most California independent-study charters, yes. Language lessons are a normal use of instructional funds. The charter has to approve the vendor and the hours first, and every school sets its own rules, so check with your Education Specialist.
Is Strommen already an approved vendor at my charter?
Ask us. We're building our list of charter approvals now. If your school hasn't approved us yet, you can usually request us as a new provider, and we'll send the vendor team everything they need.
Are your tutors background checked?
Tutors who teach charter-funded students complete the background check that the school requires before their first lesson.
Can siblings share a lesson?
Yes. Two kids at a similar level can share one tutor, which costs much less per child than two separate lessons. That matters when your charter caps how much you can spend with one vendor each month. We'll tell you honestly if their levels are too far apart to share.
Are lessons online or in person?
Both. Online lessons work anywhere in California. In-person lessons are available in the greater Los Angeles area, depending on the language.
Can we start before the charter approves us?
Yes, but you pay for those lessons yourself. Charters won't pay for lessons taught before the purchase order was issued. Some families start that way while approval goes through, then switch to charter funding once it's in place. Many of our tutors also offer a free 30-minute first lesson.
Do lessons include religious content?
No. Lessons paid for with charter funds are nonsectarian, which is what public charters require. If your family wants faith-based material, such as Biblical Hebrew or Latin for liturgy, we can arrange it as a privately paid lesson.
Which charter does your child attend?
Tell us the school and the language, and we'll handle the next step.
