The straight answer on French court credentials
Here is something most agencies will not volunteer: French is not one of California's court-certification languages. The state offers its certification exam only for a designated list of languages, and French is not on it. Court work in French instead uses registered interpreters, who qualify through the Judicial Council's requirements for non-designated languages. So when an agency promises you a certified French court interpreter in California, be skeptical. Are your French interpreters court-certified?
No one's are, in California. The state does not offer court certification in French, so the credential for French legal work is registration with the Judicial Council, which has its own qualification requirements. We send registered interpreters for court and deposition matters. An agency claiming certified French court interpreters in California is describing a credential that does not exist here.
Can you match Canadian, African, or European French?
Yes. French from Paris, Montreal, Dakar, and Abidjan is mutually intelligible, but accent, vocabulary, and pacing differ enough to matter in testimony and on camera. Tell us where your speaker is from and we will match the interpreter so the conversation runs naturally instead of through a layer of mental adjustment.
My client is Haitian. Is that French?
Maybe, and it is worth confirming. Haitian Creole is a distinct language, not a dialect of French, though many Haitians speak both. A French interpreter is not automatically qualified for Haitian Creole, and putting one in front of a Creole-dominant speaker risks a muddy record. Ask your client which language they are most comfortable in, then tell us.
