Tutor Bio
Servus! My name is Ethan Connor, and I'm a graduate student studying comparative literature in the southeastern US. I am personally focused on early modernist movements in Europe and America. Linguistically, I'm concerned with how people are able to communicate in general and dialect continuums. In terms of tutoring I'd love to offer my services helping you to learn the German language. At first, this language can present itself as unnecessarily difficult and perhaps even aggressive. I can assure you, however, that over time both of these assumptions will fade away. It's mostly our lack of exposure to other languages that lends itself to this idea and if English is your first language (as it is mine), then I'm hopeful that you'll see in time that English, as well as most languages, are inherently quirky, frustrating, and ultimately endearing.

What is your favorite word in your language and why?
Although it's an obvious choice, I'd have to say Sehnsucht. This one word encapsulates an entire literary movement, has no direct English equivalent, and it's highly poetic. It's an interesting word compound to boot made up of the verb 'to crave' and the noun 'addiction.' A good translation of the term would be something like: the intense inward longing of the soul.

What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?
This dish definitely isn't from my hometown but Risotto is absolutely my favorite meal at the moment. The dish is simple but elegant, and execution is everything. The best Risotto in the southeast hands down comes out of Ristorante Bergamo, where I learned to cook it myself.

Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?
Currently I'm learning how to read Koine Greek and beginning to learn Spanish.

What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?
When I'm not working I'm usually writing poetry and making music. I've recently picked up drums as well.

What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?
I'd still consider Ft. Myers, FL to be my hometown because I spent most of my childhood there. Recently South Carolina has become my home. More so due to the people than the amenities the state has to offer. However, I've really begun to love the mountains and the foothills in the upstate.
