Hi,
Maren here, I have lived back and forth from Oslo to Costa Rica for a long time now, and a big part of this decision is the possibility of being close to nature.
I grew up in Porsgrunn, where we speak Bokmål dialect in Norwegian, and speak English and Spanish fluently. I always like to try new things and stay active, and love to get to know new people, learn about new cultures and traditions! Among some interests of mine, we have: surfing, art, interior design, music, dance, food, yoga, meditation, languages, hikes, and just staying up to date!
I, as a teacher:
As I learned Spanish as an adult, I completely understand the hard journey of learning a new language, the fear of speaking out loud, and saying anything wrong. But I also know that that is the way to learn, from our mistakes. I will make you feel comfortable right away. I am very outgoing, and I always try to find common ground so we can get to know each other! I tend to be a bit humorous when it comes to understanding and looking at not only Norwegian but also cultural characteristics in general.
Since I have a good ear for languages and after living abroad for a long time, I can help you create bridges and memorize words, phrases, and sentences based on cultural similarities.
My educational background consists of a bachelor’s degree in teaching from the University of Oslo (so I will try to explain grammar in the best way) and market economy from BI. I have worked most of my professional life as a teacher both in Norway and American/Spanish schools in Costa Rica.
I always try to show up with a lot of energy and motivation, so we can make learning a language fun.
My lessons and teaching style:
I have a lot of materials to choose from, and that will suit individual needs.
If you want to prepare for the Norwegian test for higher education or work, we could go through the materials that Kompetanse Norge provides, so I can guarantee you will pass the level you wish for!
Grammar from A1 – C1, I try to make it fun, so hopefully that could make this part a bit better!

What is your favorite word in your language and why?
"Det er ikke bare bare" - It is not only only It is used to say that things are not always easy :)

What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?
Scandinavian shrimp sandwich. Small shrimps in homemade mayonnaise or aioli dip, with dill, lemon, salt, and pepper on homemade bread. This is easy to make yourself, and you will find fresh shrimp in local supermarkets.

Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?
I understand and write Spanish on a C1 level, and talk on a B2 level.

What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?
Norway is a country where you grow up close to nature. Therefore, hiking has been a big part of my life. I like to spend time outdoors, and when I am in Costa Rica, I enjoy surfing. In the winter, I also love to ski and to be in the mountains. I love food and desserts, so I love a good restaurant experience, same as for gaining new knowledge about cultures, history, and travel. In everyday life, my interests are movies, music and books for the most part.

What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?
My hometown will always be where I grew up, Porsgrunn, Norway. A small town south of Oslo. The county is Telemark, so you are close to the mountains and also the sea. The summers are especially beautiful in the south of Norway.
