Why Romanian?
Four reasons to take Romanian classes
The Most Overlooked Romance Language
Romanian is closer to Latin than French or Spanish in many ways. If you speak any Romance language, Romanian grammar and vocabulary will feel surprisingly familiar.
Europe's Fastest-Growing Tech Scene
Romania has become a major hub for software development and IT outsourcing. Companies like UiPath were born here, and Romanian developers are in high global demand.
Explore Transylvania for Real
Beyond the Dracula myths, Transylvania has medieval Saxon villages, painted monasteries, and some of Europe's last old-growth forests. Romanian lets you experience it all authentically.
A Latin Island in a Slavic Sea
Romania's linguistic survival is one of history's great puzzles — a Romance language surrounded by Slavic neighbors for over a millennium. Learning it is a window into this unique cultural identity.

Romanian in Los Angeles
Romanian is the only Romance language that developed in Eastern Europe, and that geographic isolation shaped it into something distinct. About 25 million people speak it, mostly in Romania and Moldova. It preserved Latin features that Spanish, French, and Italian dropped centuries ago: the case system survived in the noun endings, articles attach to the end of the word rather than before it, and the verb endings have stayed closer to vulgar Latin than the western Romance languages. At the same time, Romanian absorbed Slavic vocabulary from its neighbors, Turkish words from the Ottoman period, and Greek terms from the Byzantine era. The result is a language that feels familiar to Romance-language speakers but full of unexpected borrowed elements.
The Romanian community in LA is concentrated in the East San Fernando Valley and parts of Glendale, with smaller pockets across the Westside and South Bay. Many of our Romanian students are heritage speakers whose parents emigrated after 1989 and who want to bring back the language they half-understand from childhood. Others are professionals working with Romanian tech companies (Bucharest has become a major outsourcing hub), researchers and academics interested in Eastern European studies, or partners of Romanian-Americans planning trips to meet family in Cluj, Iași, or Timișoara.
Strommen has been matching students with private Romanian tutors in Los Angeles since 2014. Our tutors are native speakers from Romania who can teach the standard literary form or the casual Bucharest dialect. Romanian rewards Romance-language speakers who lean into the cognates and stay patient with the case endings. Lessons are one on one, online or in person, and your tutor designs every session around your goals, whether that is family travel, professional work, or finally reading Eminescu in the original.
No public Romanian group classes right now — but we can set up a semi-private class for your family, friends, or company with as few as two people. Get in touch.
Romanian class FAQ
What is the best way to learn Romanian?
Working one-on-one with a native Romanian speaker is the most efficient approach. Romanian has some grammatical features — like noun cases and enclitic articles — that are hard to internalize just from reading about them. You need to hear them used naturally and practice producing them with feedback. Between lessons, Romanian music and films are great supplementary tools. The pronunciation is phonetic and consistent, so once your ear adjusts, reading aloud becomes a powerful practice method.
How long does it take to learn Romanian?
The Foreign Service classifies Romanian as a Category I language, meaning it's among the easier languages for English speakers. If you already speak another Romance language — Spanish, French, Italian, or Portuguese — you'll move even faster because of shared vocabulary. Most students reach conversational ability within 4 to 6 months of regular lessons. Getting comfortable with the case endings and verb conjugations takes longer, but they become automatic with practice.
Is Romanian hard for English speakers?
It's moderate. The vocabulary is largely Latin-based, which helps. The pronunciation is phonetic and predictable, which also helps. The harder parts are the noun cases (Romanian has five), the definite article that sticks to the end of the word instead of appearing before it, and some verb forms. If you've studied any other Romance language, you'll find a lot of overlap. If Romanian is your first, it's still very learnable — just expect the grammar to require more attention than, say, Spanish.
Can I take Romanian classes online?
Absolutely. All of our Romanian lessons are available online. This is especially useful for Romanian since it's a less commonly taught language — online scheduling means we can match you with the right tutor without being limited by geography. Sessions run over video call with screen sharing for any written exercises or materials.
