Tutor Bio

Hola. Mi nombre es Fernando. Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, I also lived in Amsterdam for a few years before I came to Los Angeles. I have a B. A. in Journalism, and I am also an award-winning writer, teacher, translator and photographer. For many years I taught Spanish in Buenos Aires, and since 2007 I have been teaching Spanish in Los Angeles. I love all aspects of Spanish language and Hispanic culture, and my goal is to help you enjoy them as much as I do.

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

Lunfardo. It's a dialect created by immigrants. It's a gem of Río de la Plata.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

Beef, empanadas, pasta, pizza, milanesas... and much more. One great restaurant in LA is Malbec.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

I used to speak English and some Dutch, since I lived in Amsterdam, and a little, little, little Italian and Portuguese.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

Literature and arts in general. I love to go to concerts, movies, museums. Also also traveling, whenever I can. Running and swimming for exercise and soccer and rugby (the last 2 just more to watch). Cooking, whether is pasta, empanadas, barbecue and much, much more.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

My hometown is Buenos Aires. Family, friends, my whole youth. The sounds of the city, the architecture (French, Italian, Spanish), so many bookstores and theaters, the river, the old town where a huge portion of the Argentine history.

I’ve taken both group and private lessons with Fernando, and I can’t recommend him enough. He’s helped me accelerate my learning and prepare for an important exam for my workplace. His teaching style is clear and structured, and his dry sense of humor makes the classes fun, even when the material is challenging. Honestly, I’ve never learned this much in such a short amount of time. A fantastic experience all around!

I started taking Spanish classes with Fernando over two years ago, and it quickly became one of the best parts of my week. I studied Spanish in college but hadn't used it for over a decade. I've improved greatly since taking his classes. About a year ago, I went to Mexico with friends who were all amazed that I was able to help us navigate various scenarios through the language skills I've picked up from Fernando's classes. Fernando has tons of experience as a Spanish teacher and has a clear and understandable way of explaining even the most difficult concepts. The homework is always reasonable and on point, helping to cement comprehension of lessons reviewed in class. Most importantly, Fernando is funny and always makes class engaging and fun. The subjunctive tense, to me, is a very dry topic and can be incredibly painful to learn. However, Fernando makes even the subjunctive approachable. What's more, Fernando's students seem to stick with him (like me) for years, and I have met wonderful people in his group classes. I highly recommend signing up for Fernando's classes!

Fernando is the best language teacher I've ever had. I've been in his Spanish classes consistently for a few years now, and my Spanish-speaking friends are always amazed at how rapidly I've advanced. When I started, I could barely put together a full sentence. Now I'm having phone calls with my Colombian in-laws that meander from topic to topic. I can watch TV, listen to podcasts, and read news in Spanish and understand 80-100%. So I consider these classes to be one of the best investments I've made. Teaching a language is very difficult, but Fernando knows exactly what he's doing and has his pedagogy down perfectly. One thing I've noticed is that all of the students who've stuck with Fernando over the past few years are very advanced if not more or less fluent by now. That is quite an accomplishment for a class that meets only once a week for about an hour. The best part is that you will look forward to his classes because they're so much fun-- I always get a text from my partner who's in the other room asking, "what are you guys laughing about now?" :) Take Fernando!

I have studied Spanish with Strommen for 2 years, and I have had such a pleasant experience. I have had a few different teachers over this time, with different teaching styles, and I am so grateful to have been exposed to them all as they have all helped me learn different aspects of the language. Most recently I had the privilege of working with Fernando, he is a patient, kind, funny, and enjoyable teacher. I cannot recommend this company enough: great teachers and a very responsive team.

I am currently in Spanish 1B with Fernando. Fernando is very organized and patient in class. If we have a question that is a little off topic from what we are covering, he will still take the time to answer our questions as thoroughly as he can. The pace of the class is also great. I took a Spanish class with another Strommen instructor and that class went a bit too fast for my learning style. Fernando goes nice and slow with our lessons so that it never feels overwhelming or impossible to learn. He gives just the right amount of homework. Everything about this class is manageable while still teaching you tons of the language. I really appreciate Fernando's organization and teaching style. I can't wait to continue to Spanish 1C!

After the quarantine started, I signed up to take German classes online with Emanuel through Strommen. Emanuel is a great teacher and my German is getting better by the day! This is my second time using Strommen after spending two years studying Spanish with Fernando (another amazing teacher). My ability levels with the two languages are very different and in my experience the Strommen teachers are great at meeting you where you are and helping you to get where you need to go.

I contacted Strommen for Spanish classes for me and my husband, to get ready for a trip to Madrid. They answered me back very quickly via phone and walked me through the options that they had. We chose to do a private tutor who luckily lives right next to us, so it was the perfect setup. We chose 10 lessons, once a week and have 1 lesson left before our trip! Our teacher Fernando is excellent, he is knowledgeable and breaks things down for us in order to understand better. I really like his teaching approach and relaxed style. I enjoy the classes a lot and the time goes by very fast! I feel more comfortable for our trip, but also feel that there is more to learn. I am happy that we took these classes and are starting from the ground up, learning the syntaxes and grammar, etc. Looking forward to taking more classes and becoming even more comfortable with the Spanish language!

So I've just finished a Spanish class with Fernando through Strommen and I thought it was great! The class was on a weekend AND in the morning (much better than right in the middle of the day when you have stuff to do) AND close to my home, I mean, no excuses am I right? This was a group class but it was a really small group so I felt like there was more personalized instruction compared to a big class and on the other hand having a group class is awesome because there's less pressure on you when you're learning a language. As I mentioned, we had Fernando as our instructor. I appreciated his sense of humor and his patience with my many questions... The amount of homework you get is totally fine (and either way I'm going to procrastinate) and the café we met at was really nice---love their iced chai! haha. All in all I would recommend it.

I took an intermediate group Spanish convo class with Fernando before moving to Puerto Rico, and 5 months later, I'm still thinking about and missing this class. Strommen is super organized, and Fernando especially did a great job of preparing the students to improve speaking skills and make us feel comfortable practicing different topics. I took one more class before I moved in the Santa Monica area with a different company, for convenience of location, and 100% regretted making the change. I definitely recommend strommen! I only wish I would have started classes with them earlier.
