Learn more about Jelena

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

One unique word in Serbian is "razbibriga," which roughly translates to "pastime" or "entertainment" in English. What makes this word unique is its origin and structure. "Razbibriga" is a compound word formed from two separate elements: "raz," meaning "apart" or "asunder," and "bibriga," derived from the Turkish word "bebrig," which means "care" or "concern." The fusion of these elements creates a word that encapsulates the concept of engaging in activities or pursuits that provide relaxation, diversion, or enjoyment, making it distinctive in the Serbian language.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

One of my favorite dishes is "ćevapi." These grilled, sausage-like portions of minced meat, seasoned with garlic, salt, and pepper, offer a juicy and flavorful taste that's hard to resist. Served with warm bread, chopped onions, and creamy kajmak, they create a delightful harmony of flavors and textures. Beyond its deliciousness, ćevapi are also a cherished part of Serbian culinary culture, perfect for sharing and enjoying with loved ones.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

My English level is native and I love exploring languages.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

    Art, music, dance

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, is an amazing city for several reasons. Firstly, its rich history is evident in its diverse architecture, ranging from ancient fortresses to elegant Art Nouveau buildings. The city's strategic location at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers adds to its charm, offering stunning waterfront views and vibrant riverfront nightlife. Moreover, Belgrade's lively atmosphere and bustling streets exude energy and creativity, with a thriving arts and cultural scene that includes galleries, theaters, and music venues. The city's cafe culture is also legendary, with countless cafes and restaurants where locals and visitors alike can enjoy delicious cuisine and socialize. Additionally, Belgrade is known for its warm and welcoming people, who are proud of their city and eager to share its beauty and history with others. Whether exploring its historic landmarks, experiencing its vibrant nightlife, or simply soaking in its unique ambiance, Belgrade offers an unforgettable experience for anyone lucky enough to visit.
