Learn more about Marylene

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

Se débrouiller. It means, to manage, get by and it's very French.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

"Endives au gratin" that is endives cooked in the oven with cheese and Paris ham. It was one of my mother's specialties and it is really delicious. I don't know of any restaurant that serves it in LA.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

Yes. I speak German, Spanish and some Italian. My German is between B1 and B2. I actually lived in Hamburg, Germany for about 3 years and visited other places in Germany and German speaking switzerland.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

I love learning new languages (currently learning Spanish). Also, I love reading, walking, hiking, bicycling, listening to classical music and jazz. Traveling is another of my passions. I'm also a translator and interpreter and I like writing too. I also like history and I am curious about everything really.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

Paris. That is my birthplace and where I grew up. I love it because it has so many interesting and historical places. It is impossible to walk in that city for a few minutes without finding an interesting place, whether it is the architecture, the history of what it contains. There is a sense of excitement there that I haven't found in other places. I just love walking, seeing old haunts and discovering new places.
