What is your favorite word in your language and why?

Sobremesa is one of those beautiful, untranslatable Spanish words that captures an entire experience in just a few syllables. It’s not just the time after a meal—it’s the lingering, the laughter, the deep conversations that stretch long after the last bite is taken. It’s the clinking of glasses, the unhurried sipping of coffee, the unspoken agreement that no one is in a rush to leave. It’s where stories unfold, where jokes turn into belly laughs, and where bonds are strengthened over the simplest joy of shared time. In Spain and Latin America, sobremesa is a ritual, a celebration of connection. It’s proof that food isn’t just about sustenance—it’s about savoring life, one conversation at a time.

What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

For me, it’s tacos de canasta—the ultimate street food experience. There’s something magical about spotting a vendor with their iconic blue basket, steam rising as they lift the lid. The tacos, soft and soaked in deliciousness, are a bite of pure comfort. But it’s more than just the food—it’s the rhythm of the streets, the quick banter with the taquero, the unspoken bond between strangers sharing a meal on the go. It’s messy, it’s flavorful, it’s Mexico in a bite.

Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

I speak English, Spanish and French. Next goal: German or Portuguese.

What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

When I’m not teaching, I’m diving into anything artistic—filmmaking, photography, writing, acting, playing piano, you name it. Even if I’m not a master at it (yet), I just love creating. Oh, and I’m a hardcore foodie! My mission? To hit 500 restaurants in every city I live in. So far, I’m at 457 in Los Angeles—yes, I’m committed.

What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

To me, hometown isn’t just a place—it’s where my people are. Right now, that’s Mexico City, but Los Angeles is catching up. I thrive in big cities, where there’s always someone new to meet, something to learn, and never a dull moment. I love the chaos, the movement, the energy. I’m an observer, a wanderer, and someone who always needs something to do. A city that never sleeps? That’s home.
