What is your favorite word in your language and why?

My favorite word in English is serendipity. I appreciate it not only for its melodic sound but also for its meaning—the occurrence of unexpected yet fortunate discoveries. It reflects a mindset of openness, curiosity, and the beauty of finding value in the unplanned. As an educator, I find that some of the most rewarding moments in teaching and learning happen serendipitously, when creativity and insight arise naturally.

What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

Braai (Barbecue) A national pastime, not just a meal. Meats like boerewors, lamb chops, chicken, and steaks are grilled over wood or charcoal.

Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

Yes, besides the languages I teach, I also speak Afrikaans. Having the ability to communicate in Afrikaans has allowed me to connect more deeply with a broader range of learners and communities. It also enhances my appreciation for linguistic diversity and supports my overall effectiveness as a language educator.

What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

Outside of teaching, I have a strong passion for reading and traveling. Reading not only allows me to continuously expand my knowledge and stay informed, but it also helps me explore diverse perspectives and cultures through literature. Traveling, on the other hand, gives me the opportunity to experience different environments, meet people from various backgrounds, and gain a deeper understanding of the world. Both interests enrich my personal growth and bring fresh perspectives that I often integrate into my teaching practice.

What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

I consider Pretoria, Gauteng my hometown. It's a city I deeply value for its rich history, diverse cultures, and natural beauty. Known as the Jacaranda City, Pretoria offers a unique blend of academic, governmental, and cultural significance, all set against a backdrop of tree-lined streets and scenic landscapes. I appreciate its sense of community, its educational environment, and the balance it offers between urban development and natural surroundings. It's a place that has shaped both my personal and professional identity.
