Tutor Bio

I'm Jessica (Ying). Beyond being a native speaker, I bring 25 years of experience as a Senior Manager at the Australian Consulate-General to our lessons.

With degrees in Economics from Sun Yat-Sen University and GDUFS, my expertise lies at the intersection of language, business logic, and cross-cultural nuance. I don't just teach you how to speak; I teach you how to navigate complex conversations and understand the subtle 'why' behind Chinese social and professional codes. Whether you are a professional, an expat, or a heritage learner, I provide the cultural depth that AI tools simply cannot replicate.

Personally Vetted · Strømmen’s Note

Before this, Ying spent twenty-five years as a senior diplomatic mission manager. She runs Chinese lessons like a project plan: milestones, roadmap, real scenarios.

Learn more about Ying

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

In Chinese, my favorite word is “planning", 计划. I have a strong affection for planning because, with careful forethought, I can ensure that all my tasks are managed effectively and efficiently.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

It's a hard question, as there are so many delicious dishes and restaurants in my city! Guangzhou is called a "city of gourmet foods". If you ever come to this place, I can guide you.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

    I speak English and Cantonese.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

I enjoy outdoor hiking, cycling, and also enjoy reading a lot of good books. Besides, I love cooking and getting together with family and friends.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

Guangzhou is a wonderful place to live. It is a megacity of 18 million people from all over China; it’s like a melting pot of multiple cultures and people groups. It’s a city with a long history of over 2000 years, also the hometown of Cantonese people and the Cantonese language. Today it’s a modern and inclusive city with rich diversity. So here you can have a great work-life balance, which is why many foreigners love it.
