One-on-one

Don't want to wait for a group?

3 French groups are on the schedule. The next one starts Jan 16. A private French tutor can start this week. You pick lesson times from their calendar, and lessons can be in person around LA or online. We meet every tutor before they teach for us. Here are a few of them.

"As low as" is the hourly rate with a lesson package. Single lessons cost more, and every profile lists both.

Book your first lesson right from a tutor's calendar.

Each profile shows the tutor's rates and open times, so you can book without waiting to hear back from us.

Why French?

Four reasons to take French classes

Spoken well beyond France

The Organisation internationale de la Francophonie counted 396 million French speakers in its 2026 report, most of them in Africa. French learned in an LA classroom works as well in Abidjan as it does in Paris.

French for actors

Our dialect coaches get actors ready for French-speaking roles, both before the shoot and on set. If you have French dialogue to learn or a French-language audition coming up, a tutor can work through your lines with you sound by sound.

Small groups & happy hours

Our French groups are small. You can join one online, and some terms there's an in-person group in Hollywood. Past classes have included a French movie club and conversation groups. Students and tutors also meet up at our Language Aperitivo happy hours, where the table switches between French, Spanish, Italian and English.

A head start from Spanish

French and Spanish both grew out of Latin, so if you speak Spanish, as a lot of Angelenos do, plenty of French vocabulary will look familiar: libertad is liberté, and escuela is école. Pronunciation takes more work, since French has at least twice as many vowel sounds as Spanish.

French in Los Angeles

Strommen has taught French in Los Angeles since 2006, in small groups and one-on-one. For private lessons, our French tutors around LA teach at your home or office or online, and many offer a lower rate if you go to them.

Some students are planning a trip to Paris or a move to Montréal. Others have French-speaking family, or want back the French they gave up after school. If you’re not sure where you’d place, our free French level test will point you to the right class.

Our dialect coaches also prepare actors for French on screen, including Patrick Stewart for Star Trek: Picard. You can see more of that work in our coaching résumé.

French class FAQ

Should I take private or group French classes?

Private lessons are booked around your schedule and your tutor's openings, and you can move or cancel one with at least 24 hours' notice. The whole hour goes to your French, so if speed matters most, go private. Group classes run on a fixed weekly schedule for about eight weeks. They cost less by the hour, and classmates who expect you each week make it harder to skip. You can also add private lessons partway through a group term.

How long does it take to learn French?

French is one of the Foreign Service Institute's Category I languages, the ones closest to English, though it sits at the slow end of the group. FSI expects its students to need about 30 weeks of French, at 23 classroom hours a week, to reach professional working proficiency. Everyday conversation comes far earlier. After a lesson or two, your tutor will know your level and how much time you have each week, and can tell you what to expect. Students with a move to France or an exam on the calendar can book one of our intensive French tutors and fit more lessons into each week.

Is French hard for English speakers?

A lot of written French will look familiar. Close to 30% of English vocabulary comes from French, so words like question and restaurant need no translation. Listening is harder, because spoken French drops much of what the spelling shows: il parle and ils parlent usually sound the same. The nasal vowels and the French r take practice too, and a tutor can hear mistakes you won't catch on your own.

Can I take French classes online?

Yes. You can join an online French group from anywhere, and the Online filter on the class grid above shows which ones are running. For private lessons, many of our French tutors teach by video, and the ones who also teach in person say so on their card.

Do you offer a free French level test?

Yes. The French level test is free, and you don't need an account. In about five minutes it places you on the CEFR scale, somewhere from A1 to C2. If you studied French in school years ago, it's a quick way to see how much stuck before you choose a group.

What about French for kids?

We teach kids too, and tutors adjust to the child's age. With young beginners, they lean on games and conversation more than grammar drills. Older kids can bring in homework from a school French class or an immersion program and work through it with their tutor. Browse our French tutors for kids.
