Hola, my name is José! I am a native Spanish speaker from Venezuela and I am currently pursuing a university degree in Modern Languages.
My teaching approach is highly practical and structured. I specialize in Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), which means we won't just memorize endless grammar rules; instead, we will focus on real-world communication. Whether you need to learn Spanish for an upcoming trip, for your career, or just for fun, I design personalized 1-on-1 lessons that fit your unique learning style and goals.
In our classes, we will use highly visual materials, interactive games, and cultural media to keep your brain engaged and motivated. As someone who has worked extensively in the travel industry, I also love incorporating rich cultural insights and practical travel vocabulary into my lessons.

What is your favorite word in your language and why?
My favorite word in Spanish is 'Chévere'. It means 'cool' or 'great,' but to us, it’s so much more than just being okay—it’s an entire vibe! When someone asks 'How are you?' and you answer '¡Chévere!', it means you are doing better than good. It perfectly represents the resilient and joyful spirit of my culture: finding a way to stay positive and see the bright side, no matter what.

What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?
My absolute favorite dish from my hometown of Maturín is Cachapa con Queso de Mano y Cochino Frito (a thick, sweet corn pancake filled with soft, artisanal cheese, served with crispy fried pork). Even though I live in Valencia now, the best place I have ever tasted it is still back home at a spot called 'Restaurante Criollo y Gourmet'. Nothing beats their authentic flavor!

Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?
As a true language enthusiast, I am always learning. While I teach my native Spanish, I am fluent in English and currently studying European Portuguese. I am also picking up Japanese casually as a hobby—watching anime inspired me to learn useful phrases. It's a great way to connect with the culture and experience the language without the pressure of intense studying.

What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?
Outside of teaching, I am a huge fan of immersive storytelling! I actively play video games, especially Genshin Impact, and I love relaxing by watching movies and TV series. I am also an avid reader and actively participate in a book club where we explore a wide variety of genres. And, of course, my language curiosity never really turns off—even in my free time, I am always picking up new words and phrases in different languages just for fun.

What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?
I proudly consider Maturín my hometown, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I love it because it is small, welcoming, and has a very cozy, familiar vibe. The main reason it holds such a special place in my heart is that it isn't overcrowded—it is a genuinely peaceful and quiet city where you can truly relax.
