Tutor Bio

I'm Maddy and I teach French, ESL, and beginner Spanish. I've always been a language lover and started learning French at an early age. While I grew up in the UK, I had extended family in France with whom I often went to stay, which enabled me to develop bilingual fluency. I studied English Literature at Oxford University for a year or so, before moving to the U.S, and switching my major to French. I graduated (4.0 with an award for the most outstanding student in the foreign language department), then taught for 17 years at Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles, (both English as a foreign language to French kids and French as a foreign language to Americans).

I’m currently teaching French one-on-one to middle and high schoolers at Fusion Academy as well as privately and have collaborated with a French Canadian author on an English translation of his first novel that was originally published in French.

I have tutored extensively both in person and online and what I love most about it is helping people connect with and cultivate their intrinsic motivation. I believe that learning can and should be empowering, engaging and accessible. My strengths as a teacher are gentleness, encouragement, creativity and learner centered-ness (meaning attunement to students’ needs and feelings). I understand the connection between confidence, motivation and success, so if choose to you work with me sensitivity, patience, and understanding are guaranteed!

Learn more about Maddy

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

Oh, I couldn't pick just one!

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

Maybe "Fish & chips" but I'm too health conscious these days to indulge and have yet to find a U.S. restaurant that could replicate it.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

I flirt with Spanish but the attraction hasn't been deep enough for me to get really serious with it. I've read a few books in Spanish but lack intensive conversational experience and haven't been sufficiently disciplined to master all the verb conjugations in all tenses.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

Health truth and health freedom. I had an epiphany several years ago that ignited a passion in me for those things after discovering the depth to which the pharmaceutical industry (and / or medical industrial complex) controls science, government, medicine, the media and the "narrative" or information landscape. Corporate capture and the extent to which truth gets buried and distorted around these issues is astonishing. So, I listen to a lot of interesting counter-narrative sources and write research articles for a donation-funded holistic health blog.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

I guess that would have to be LA, now. I don't love everything about it but the climate's pretty great and there's easy access to most things that are important to me.
