Tutor Bio

Hello, my name is Sofia Toufa, and I bring a unique blend of teaching, interpreting, and creative expertise to help bridge linguistic and cultural divides. With over two decades of experience in the entertainment industry, I’ve developed a versatile skill set in communication, creative problem-solving, and collaboration with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Growing up in a Greek family in Germany and working internationally, I became fluent in German, Greek, and English. This multilingual proficiency has deepened my appreciation for cross-cultural understanding.

My passion for teaching languages is shaped by my career as both a performer and an educator, with experience coaching vocal talent on high-profile productions like X Factor and The Masked Singer. My voiceover work has also given me a keen ear for authentic accents, which is invaluable for language learners aiming for precise pronunciation.

Key strengths I bring include:

-Language Teaching Expertise: Specializing in German and Greek for English speakers, tailoring lessons to individual learning styles and goals.
-Translation & Interpretation: Offering accurate, idiomatic translations and cultural interpretations for effective communication.
-Cultural Sensitivity: My multicultural background allows me to connect with learners in meaningful ways.
-Music as a Teaching Tool: Using melody and rhythm to enhance language retention through creative techniques.
-Voice Training for Learners: Helping students refine their pronunciation and confidence through voice work and accent coaching.
-Detail-Oriented & Deadline-Driven: My experience in the fast-paced entertainment industry has honed my organizational skills.

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

There isn’t a perfect one-word translation in English, to my favorite Greek word but the closest meaning of "Filoxenia (Φιλοξενία)" it’s a deep-rooted cultural value in Greece, emphasizing generosity and carries an emotional and moral duty to welcome others with warmth. "Filo" (Φίλο) – meaning friend or love , "Xenia" (Ξενία) – meaning stranger. Together, Filoxenia literally translates to "friend to strangers". "Fernweh" would be my favorite German word! It means aching to be somewhere far away, a deep desire to travel or experience distant places. It’s basically the opposite of homesickness. In English I'd say: Serendipity! I like words that sound like what they are, such as "buzz".

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

Growing up in Southern Germany, Swabian food like Kartoffelsalat (potato salad) and Spätzle mit Soss (egg noodle type things with a brown sauce) will always be close to my heart. But at home, nothing beats my mom's Greek cooking—Spanakorizo (spinach and rice) and her Greek salad always hit the spot. Glühwein (mulled wine) at the Christmas markets in Germany is not to be missed!

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

I'm learning Spanish myself and I had French in high school.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

I get very invested in topics! Currently I'm working on a teabrand I co-founded. My hobbies tend to turn into business ideas quickly. Food, Wine, Music, Movies, Travel, Health....

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

Undeniably, Los Angeles has been my home for nearly 20 years now, and it’s where I’ve built my life and career. But as a true cosmopolitan with roots and loved ones spread across different countries, I find myself feeling both at home and never quite fully settled anywhere. Home is a blend of places and people.
