NOVECENTO Book

The Best Italian Books for Advanced Italian Students

Below is a list (that we update regularly) with our favorite books in Italian for Advanced-Intermediate Italian students.

Literature and fiction in Italian is quite a bit different than in English. There is a tendency to use the Passato Remoto a lot. We really like the short play called Novecento by Baricco (see this post for a sample) because it is a monologue. This is great because the protagonist speaks as if he is talking in conversational italian unlike most works of fiction that are often in the 3rd person.

See below for our list:

    1) Novecento: A monologue about a pianist who is born on a steamship that travels between Europe and America at the turn of the century.

2) la boutique del mistero:

3) Accabadora
