Learn Algerian Darija the way Algerians actually speak it.

What is your favorite word in your language and why?

My favorite word in Algerian Arabic is “samaa” (سماء), which means “sky.” I love how light and soft it sounds when you pronounce it. It is a simple word, but I find its sound very beautiful.

What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

My favorite dish is Chakhchoukha, a traditional Algerian dish. I don't know of a particular local restaurant that specializes in it, but that is actually because it is something you can find in almost every Algerian home. We especially prepare it for family gatherings and weddings, so for me it is connected not only to food but also to family, celebrations and good memories.

Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

I speak French, which I have studied since I was a child, and I am currently developing my Spanish, which is around an A2 level. I enjoy learning languages because it also helps me understand how people from different cultures express themselves.

What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

Outside of teaching, I really enjoy reading, especially novels in French, and traveling around Algeria. I love discovering different parts of the country, especially because Algeria has such a variety of landscapes, cultures and traditions.

What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

I consider my hometown my real home. I left it to study in Algiers for five years, but I have always felt attached to it. For me, it represents family, familiarity and a slower, more comfortable way of life. No matter how long I spend away from it, going back home always gives me that feeling of being with my family and returning to something familiar.
