Show your working on every question
Cambridge mark schemes award method marks for working that demonstrates the right approach, accuracy marks for correct intermediate values, and final-answer marks. An answer with no working can score 1 mark on a 5-mark question. The same final answer with four lines of working scores all 5. Practice on past papers, not textbooks

Core caps at C; pick Extended if you're borderline
The 0580 Core syllabus tops out at maximum grade C. The 0580 Extended syllabus is the route for A and A*. Universities treat a B at Extended as more competitive than an A at Core. If you're borderline between Core and Extended, the right move is Extended with adequate prep time, not Core with less. Confirm with your school's math department before locking in the syllabus.

Train the non-calculator paper specifically
Cambridge 0580 Extended Paper 2 is 2 hours of non-calculator math. Students who only ever practice with a calculator on the desk underperform on this paper even when they know the content. The Edexcel 4MA1 is calculator-throughout and doesn't have this constraint. Cambridge candidates need to train arithmetic fluency, fraction discipline, and mental-math speed alongside the content.

Three significant figures unless otherwise specified
Cambridge mark schemes expect numerical answers to three significant figures unless the question specifies otherwise. Answers rounded to two significant figures, or left as long decimals, lose accuracy marks. Units must appear on physical quantities. The famous Cambridge convention is small in any individual question but compounds across a 100-mark paper.
e.g. Length = 7.2436 cm rounds to 7.24 cm, not 7.2 cm. Always check the question's stated precision.
About IGCSE Math
IGCSE Math, paper by paper
IGCSE Mathematics is the international qualification taken by students in roughly Years 10-11 (ages 14-16) across British curriculum schools and international schools worldwide. The dominant version is Cambridge International's IGCSE, run by Cambridge Assessment International Education and sat under syllabus codes 0580 (Mathematics, Core and Extended) and 0607 (International Mathematics, Core and Extended). A separate Cambridge IGCSE 0606 Additional Mathematics is the harder bridging qualification that overlaps with AS-Level Pure Mathematics 1 and is taken by stronger candidates alongside or after 0580 Extended. Edexcel offers an alternative International GCSE Mathematics (4MA1, Specification A and B), accepted by the same universities. The qualifications are not identical in content or paper structure, but they are accepted interchangeably for university admission. Confirm which board your school sits before choosing prep materials.
Core versus Extended is the choice that shapes the whole prep cycle. The 0580 Core syllabus tops out at a maximum grade of C; the 0580 Extended syllabus is the route for any student aiming at A or A*. Stronger candidates always sit Extended. Cambridge 0580 Extended is sat as Paper 2 (non-calculator, 2 hours) plus Paper 4 (calculator, 2 hours 30 minutes). Edexcel 4MA1 Specification A is sat as Paper 1 (calculator throughout, 2 hours) plus Paper 2 (calculator throughout, 2 hours), with no non-calculator paper, which is the single biggest structural difference from Cambridge. The non-calculator papers reward different prep habits: arithmetic fluency, fraction discipline, mental-math speed on basic computation, and the ability to work cleanly through long algebraic manipulations without checking each step on a calculator. Candidates who only ever practice with a calculator on the desk underperform on Cambridge Paper 2 even when they know the content. The stumble points we see most often in IGCSE Math prep. American students underestimating the working-presentation requirement. The mark scheme awards working, not just answers. Candidates who skip working presentation can pass IGCSE Math at the B level on right answers alone but cannot reach A* without it. Skipping past-paper practice in favor of textbook practice. Textbook problems are not marked against the Cambridge mark scheme; past papers are. Candidates who practice exclusively from textbooks build content fluency but lose marks on real exams to the unfamiliar question phrasing Cambridge actually uses. The UK GCSE Mathematics (taken by domestic UK students at the same ages) is similar in level to IGCSE Core, with Higher Tier roughly comparable to IGCSE Extended; admission decisions treat them interchangeably. The US-curriculum equivalent is Algebra 1 plus Geometry plus parts of Algebra 2, distributed across multiple years rather than compressed into one qualification. The American student moving from a US public-school math sequence into a British international school for Year 10 often hits IGCSE Extended cold; the syllabus assumes content the US sequence covers in Algebra 2, and the working-presentation expectations are foreign. Sit whichever board your school administers. Cambridge IGCSE 0580 and Edexcel 4MA1 are both accepted interchangeably by UK, Australian, Canadian, and US universities for admission purposes.
