CBSE Math strategy — board playbook

5 CBSE Math moves students wish they'd drilled earlier

These aren't textbook tips. They're the marking-scheme-aware habits that separate a 75 from a 95. Screenshot the infographic, then book a tutor to drill the rest.

  1. 01

Work through every NCERT exemplar problem

NCERT publishes both the standard textbook exercises and a harder set called the Exemplar problems. Many students assume the Exemplar problems are optional. They are not optional in any serious CBSE prep plan. The Exemplar problems are calibrated closer to the actual board exam question style, and students who skip them consistently underperform on the longer board exam questions.

e.g. Class 10 Trigonometry has 27 questions across the standard exercises and another 50 in the Exemplar. Work through all of them.

  2. 02

Show every step; the marking scheme rewards working

CBSE marking schemes award marks for the method, the substitution, the intermediate steps, and the final answer separately. Students who rush to a final answer without showing working can lose half the marks on a six-mark question even when the answer is correct. The marking scheme is published with each year's sample paper and shows exactly how marks are awarded. Train the working-presentation discipline from week one of prep.

e.g. Six-mark Calculus question: write the formula, substitute, show each integration step, state the answer with units. All steps.

  3. 03

Practice on the actual board sample paper and previous years

CBSE publishes a sample paper for each year in October before the February-March exam, plus ten years of previous year question papers, openly on cbse.gov.in. Practicing on these is the most leveraged work available because they match the exact pattern, format, and difficulty distribution students will see on board exam day. Textbook problems build content fluency but do not match the board exam style.

e.g. Class 12 Math sample paper for 2026, plus previous papers from 2014 through 2025: that is the prep corpus.

  4. 04

Sit timed mock papers from at least eight weeks out

The CBSE board exam is three hours, which is longer than most students have ever sat for math in one sitting. Students who have not practiced under the full three-hour clock underperform on pacing. From at least eight weeks before the board exam date, sit one full timed past paper per week under real exam conditions: full three hours, no breaks, no notes, no phone, marked against the marking scheme afterward.

e.g. Twelve weeks before exam: weekly full timed papers. Marked against marking scheme. Reviewed with tutor.

  5. 05

Class 12: pick Standard Mathematics if you need JEE or STEM

CBSE Class 12 Math splits into Standard Mathematics (course code 041, required for engineering and JEE candidates) and Applied Mathematics (course code 241, an alternative for commerce and economics tracks). Standard Mathematics covers full calculus, matrices, three-dimensional geometry, and vector algebra at the rigor JEE expects. Applied Mathematics is lighter on calculus and rigor. Pick Standard if your university path requires it.

e.g. Engineering or pure science aspirant: Standard Math (041) is the required choice. Commerce track: Applied Math (241) works.

About CBSE Math

CBSE Math, chapter by chapter

What you'll cover

Lessons & classes tailored to CBSE Math

Diagnostic + chapter-by-chapter NCERT mastery

Your first lesson is usually a diagnostic against a recent CBSE sample paper or previous year paper at your target class. The tutor scores it against the official marking scheme, identifies the dragging chapter, and plans the first six weeks around that chapter. Subsequent lessons progress through the NCERT textbook chapter by chapter, including the harder NCERT Exemplar problems for each chapter, then onto previous year board papers.

Class 10 syllabus coverage

Real Numbers, Polynomials, Linear Equations in Two Variables, Quadratic Equations, Arithmetic Progressions, Triangles, Coordinate Geometry, Introduction to Trigonometry, Applications of Trigonometry, Circles, Areas Related to Circles, Surface Areas and Volumes, Statistics, and Probability. The full Class 10 board exam syllabus, taught in the sequence that matches school timetables, with chapter-specific past-paper drilling once the content is consolidated.

Class 12 syllabus coverage (Standard Mathematics)

Relations and Functions, Inverse Trigonometric Functions, Matrices, Determinants, Continuity and Differentiability, Application of Derivatives, Integrals, Application of Integrals, Differential Equations, Vector Algebra, Three Dimensional Geometry, Linear Programming, Probability. The standard stream required for engineering and STEM university applications. For students preparing JEE in parallel, lessons coordinate with the broader JEE prep timeline. Our IGCSE Math page covers the British curriculum sibling.

Marking-scheme awareness and full timed mock papers

The CBSE marking scheme rewards working presentation: formula, substitution, intermediate steps, final answer with units. Lessons drill the discipline from week one. From eight weeks before the board exam, weekly full timed past papers under real three-hour exam conditions, marked against the marking scheme and reviewed in detail with the tutor. The detailed mark-scheme review surfaces exactly which question types are costing marks.

FAQ

About CBSE Math lessons & classes

Class 10 or Class 12: which CBSE Math prep is more important?

Depends on your university path. Class 10 board marks are used for higher secondary admission and stand on their own as a recognized credential, but the higher-stakes exam for university admission is the Class 12 board exam (along with competitive entrance exams like JEE for engineering candidates). Most students prep for both but the Class 12 prep typically runs more intensively across the full two years of higher secondary. Either or both can be the focus of CBSE Math tutoring.

Should I take Class 12 Standard Mathematics or Applied Mathematics?

Standard Mathematics (course code 041) is required for engineering, JEE Main and JEE Advanced, pure science programs, and most STEM university admissions in India and internationally. Applied Mathematics (course code 241) is the alternative stream for commerce, economics, and applied programs that do not require the full pure-math content. If your university path is engineering or hard sciences, Standard is the required choice. If your path is commerce or economics, Applied is usually sufficient and lighter. Check with your school counselor before locking in the choice.

Is the NCERT textbook really enough for CBSE Math prep?

NCERT is the foundation and substantially more than half of board exam questions can be solved using NCERT methods. The NCERT Exemplar problems (a harder problem set published alongside the textbook) are also required for serious prep, since the Exemplar style is closer to the actual board exam questions. Reference books like R.D. Sharma and R.S. Aggarwal supplement NCERT with additional practice once the NCERT foundation is solid. NCERT is necessary; NCERT alone is sometimes sufficient for the lower mark bands but supplementation helps for the 90+ range.

How does the CBSE Math board exam grading work?

The Class 10 and Class 12 board exams are scored out of 80 marks each, with an additional 20 marks from internal school assessment for the full 100-mark scheme. Marks are awarded by step: method marks for working that demonstrates the right approach, accuracy marks for correct intermediate values, and final answer marks. The marking scheme is published with each year's sample paper. Grades are awarded as percentage marks, with 90+ considered excellent, 75-90 strong, 60-75 satisfactory, and below 60 weak for competitive university admission.

How long does CBSE Math prep take?

Depends on baseline and target. A student tracking on 75 who wants to upgrade to 90+ typically takes 4-6 months of one or two weekly lessons plus consistent past-paper practice. A student catching up on weaker chapters cold typically takes 6-9 months. A Class 12 student preparing CBSE Math alongside JEE Main and JEE Advanced typically takes the full two-year higher secondary cycle, with progressively more JEE-specific content layered on top of the CBSE board prep in the final year. Intensive prep can compress these timelines, but past-paper practice is the gating step.

Are your CBSE Math tutors based in India or in the US?

Both. The Strommen CBSE Math roster includes India-based tutors (typically in Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad) teaching online to students worldwide, US-based tutors of Indian origin with deep CBSE prep experience, and tutors based in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Gulf countries where CBSE-affiliated international schools predominate. Each tutor's bio specifies their location and timezone availability. Online lessons via Zoom or Jitsi work cleanly across timezones.

Can my child prep CBSE Math online?

Yes, and most do, particularly because CBSE candidates are spread across many time zones globally. Most of our CBSE Math tutors teach entirely online via Zoom or Jitsi with screen-share or a shared whiteboard for working through problems together. The chapter-by-chapter NCERT review translates cleanly to video because both tutor and student can see the same textbook page and worked solution simultaneously. Several tutors also offer in-person lessons in Los Angeles for families in the Indian-American community there.

Will CBSE Math help my child with JEE or NEET?

Yes, but CBSE board prep alone is not sufficient for JEE Main, JEE Advanced, or NEET. The CBSE Class 12 Standard Mathematics syllabus covers the foundational topics JEE Main tests, but JEE Main goes deeper, JEE Advanced goes substantially deeper still, and the question style differs from board exam questions. Students seriously aiming at IIT or top NIT admissions typically run parallel CBSE board prep and JEE-specific coaching across both Class 11 and Class 12. CBSE prep is necessary but not sufficient; JEE-specific prep is the additional layer.
