ISEE Math strategy — admissions playbook

5 ISEE Math moves families wish they'd known sooner

These aren't textbook tips. They're the section-aware and stanine-aware habits that separate a stanine 6 from a stanine 8. Screenshot the infographic, then book a tutor to drill the rest.

  1. 01

Stanines are what admissions actually reads

Each ISEE section produces a scaled score, a percentile, and a stanine (1 to 9). Admissions committees almost always read the stanine first. Stanine 9 is the top 4% of test-takers; stanine 8 the next 7%; stanine 7 the next 12%. Competitive independent schools want stanines of 7+, the most selective want 8 or 9. Tracking prep progress against the stanine target, not the scaled score, is what aligns with how admissions actually decides.

e.g. Stanine 6 to stanine 8 is a meaningful improvement in admissions terms, even if the scaled score change looks modest.

  2. 02

Quantitative Reasoning is its own section, not a math computation race

Quantitative Reasoning tests mathematical reasoning, not computation. Word problems, logical deduction, pattern recognition, estimation, comparison of quantities. The Upper Level includes Quantitative Comparison, a question type unique to the ISEE. Students who treat it as a computation race miscompute and lose points; students who read carefully and identify what the problem actually asks score significantly higher.

e.g. Quantitative Comparison: "Column A or Column B greater?" Specific format. Drill it separately.

  3. 03

No calculator on either math section

Both ISEE math sections are calculator-prohibited at all three levels. Students used to calculator-permitted school math significantly underperform if they have not specifically drilled mental arithmetic and pen-and-paper computation. The no-calculator format is the structural challenge most students have never faced in their school math career. Practice computation without a calculator from week one of prep.

e.g. Drill fractions, decimal arithmetic, multiplication tables, division, percentages all without a calculator.

  4. 04

The two math sections need different prep

Quantitative Reasoning rewards close reading of word problems and logical deduction. Mathematics Achievement rewards computational fluency and curriculum-aligned content. Treating them as one combined math section underperforms compared to drilling them as two distinct sections with two distinct strategies. The diagnostic from the first lesson identifies the weaker of the two and the dragging content areas within each.

e.g. Quantitative Reasoning prep: word problem strategy, Quantitative Comparison drill. Math Achievement prep: arithmetic fluency, content gap-fill.

  5. 05

Time pressure matters; sit full timed mocks

ISEE sections are timed tightly. Quantitative Reasoning is 35 minutes for roughly 37 questions; Mathematics Achievement is 30 to 40 minutes for 30 to 47 questions depending on level. Students who have not practiced under the real timer run out of time. From six to eight weeks before test date, sit one full timed past paper per week under real exam conditions, mark against the official scoring guide, and review with the tutor.

e.g. Weekly full timed practice from eight weeks out: Verbal, Quant Reasoning, Reading, Math Achievement, Essay, in test order.

What you'll cover

Lessons & classes tailored to ISEE Math

Level identification + diagnostic

Your first lesson is usually a diagnostic against an official ISEE practice test at your target level (Lower for grades 5-6, Middle for 7-8, Upper for 9-12). The tutor scores the sections, projects stanines, and identifies the weaker math section (Quantitative Reasoning or Mathematics Achievement) and the dragging content areas within each. ERB's What to Expect on the ISEE guide for each level is the official reference.

Quantitative Reasoning strategy

Word-problem strategy, logical deduction, estimation, and the kind of multi-step reasoning the section actually rewards. For Upper Level candidates, dedicated drilling on the Quantitative Comparison question format (unique to the ISEE; does not appear on SAT or ACT). Calculator-free mental arithmetic and pen-and-paper computation built in from week one because the section prohibits calculators.

Mathematics Achievement content coverage

Arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, basic algebra, basic geometry, with Upper Level adding more advanced algebra and early high-school geometry. Content-gap fill where the student's school math has gaps, plus format-specific practice on the question style. Computational fluency built through systematic no-calculator practice.

Full timed mocks + stanine projection

From six to eight weeks before test date, lessons shift to full timed mock papers under real ISEE exam-clock conditions. Section-by-section scoring with stanine projection so the family knows where the student stands against the target school list. Detailed review of every miss, classified by content gap, format unfamiliarity, or pacing. For older students preparing for SAT and ACT, our SAT Math and ACT pages pick up the next stage.

FAQ

About ISEE Math lessons & classes

Which ISEE level should my child take?

Lower Level for students applying to enter grades 5 and 6. Middle Level for students applying to enter grades 7 and 8. Upper Level for students applying to enter grades 9 through 12 (most commonly used for grade 9 admissions to selective independent high schools, with some schools also using it for transfer admissions to grades 10, 11, or 12). The level is determined by the entry grade the child is applying for, not by the child's current grade. Each level tests the same five sections in the same order but content and difficulty scale to the appropriate age band.

What stanine should my child aim for?

Depends on the target school list. Highly competitive independent schools typically want stanines of 7+, with the most selective wanting 8 or 9. Less selective schools accept stanines in the 5-7 range. The school's admissions office often publishes the middle 50% stanine range of admitted students, which is the right reference for where to aim. Tutors can calibrate the prep arc to the target stanine; moving from stanine 6 to 8 is a meaningful improvement in admissions terms even when the scaled-score difference looks modest.

Why are there two math sections on the ISEE?

Because they test different things. Quantitative Reasoning tests mathematical reasoning: word problems, logical deduction, pattern recognition, estimation, comparison of quantities. Mathematics Achievement tests computational fluency and curriculum-aligned content: arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, basic algebra, basic geometry. A student strong at school math but weak at word problems can score well on Mathematics Achievement and poorly on Quantitative Reasoning, or vice versa. The two-section structure gives admissions committees a more complete picture of mathematical ability.

Can my child use a calculator on the ISEE?

No. Both math sections (Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematics Achievement) are calculator-prohibited at all three levels (Lower, Middle, Upper). This is the structural feature most prep books underemphasize and most students underestimate. Students used to calculator-permitted school math significantly underperform on the no-calculator format if they have not specifically drilled mental arithmetic and pen-and-paper computation. Calculator-free practice is essential from week one of prep.

What is the Quantitative Comparison question type?

Quantitative Comparison is a question format that appears only on the Upper Level Quantitative Reasoning section. The student is shown two quantities (Column A and Column B) and asked whether one is greater, the other is greater, they are equal, or the relationship cannot be determined from the given information. The format does not appear on the SAT, ACT, or most other American standardized tests, which means students need specific practice with it. The Lower and Middle Levels do not include Quantitative Comparison questions.

How long does ISEE Math prep take?

Depends on baseline and target. A student tracking on stanine 5 who wants to upgrade to stanine 7+ typically takes 3-5 months of one or two weekly lessons plus consistent practice. A student catching up on weaker content cold typically takes 5-7 months. Intensive prep can compress these timelines, but full timed past-paper practice is the gating step. ERB allows each child to test the ISEE up to three times per twelve-month period across three testing seasons (Fall, Winter/Spring, Summer), so families can plan multiple sittings if needed.

Can ISEE Math prep be online?

Yes, and most candidates do, particularly because tutors with deep ISEE prep experience are concentrated in specific regions and online lessons broaden access. Most of our ISEE Math tutors prep students entirely online via Zoom or Jitsi with screen-share or a shared whiteboard. The Quantitative Reasoning strategy work and the calculator-free Mathematics Achievement drilling both translate cleanly to video. Several tutors also offer in-person lessons in Los Angeles.

What's the difference between the ISEE and the SSAT?

Both are admissions tests for American independent schools. The ISEE is administered by ERB, the SSAT by the SSAT Board, and many independent schools accept either. The format and content differ in details: the ISEE has the unique Quantitative Comparison question type (Upper Level) and the no-calculator policy on both math sections; the SSAT has guessing penalties (the ISEE does not); the SSAT and ISEE essays have slightly different prompts. Some schools prefer one over the other; some accept both equally. Check each target school's published preference.
