5 Calculus moves students wish they'd drilled earlier

  1. 01

    Show every step on AP free response

    AP Calculus scoring guidelines award points for setting up the integral, identifying the rule, stating units, and showing the algebraic step that produced the answer. The College Board publishes past scoring guidelines on apcentral. Read them. Students who write only the final answer lose 20-30 percent of their free-response potential even when the answer is correct.

    e.g. Free response: write the integral, state the bounds, evaluate at each, state the answer with units. All four steps.

    AB or BC: pick BC if your STEM goal is competitive

    AP Calculus AB is one-semester Calculus 1. AP Calculus BC adds the Calculus 2 content: parametric, polar, vector-valued functions, sequences and series including Taylor and Maclaurin. BC earns a separate AB subscore. Competitive STEM admissions look for BC when the school offers it. Take BC if you can handle the pace; otherwise take AB carefully rather than BC under stress.

    e.g. Engineering-track student at a school offering BC: take BC and prep for it from week one of the school year.

  3. 03

    Optimization and related rates are formulaic; drill them

    Both look hard the first time and become procedural with practice. Optimization: identify the quantity, write it as a function of one variable using the constraint, differentiate, set to zero, verify max or min, state in context. Related rates: write the relationship, differentiate implicitly with respect to time, plug in knowns, solve for the unknown rate. Drill 20-30 of each across the prep cycle.

    e.g. Related rates classic: a ladder sliding down a wall. dx/dt and dy/dt are related by the Pythagorean theorem differentiated implicitly.

    Integration technique selection is the real skill

    Differentiation rules are systematic. Integration is not. The toolkit (basic antiderivatives, u-substitution, integration by parts, partial fractions, trigonometric substitution, improper integrals, Taylor series for BC) is finite but picking the right technique for the integral in front of you takes practice. Mixed integration problem sets where the technique is not signaled are the most useful drill at this level.

    e.g. Integral of x*cos(x): integration by parts (u=x, dv=cos(x)dx). Integral of 1/(x^2+1): basic antiderivative (arctan). Recognize the pattern.

  5. 05

    Algebra gaps masquerade as calculus gaps

    A surprising fraction of calculus difficulty traces back to algebra: logarithm and exponent rules, factoring quadratics, fraction arithmetic, manipulating exponents with negative or fractional powers. When a student is stuck simplifying a derivative or evaluating an integral, the gap is often algebra, not calculus. Diagnose early and patch the foundation before the next test cycle.

    e.g. Stuck simplifying d/dx[ln(x^2+1)]? The chain rule is fine; the issue is comfort with logarithm and quotient algebra.

About Calculus lessons & classes

Should my child take AP Calculus AB or BC?

BC if the school offers it and the student can handle the pace. AP Calculus AB covers single-variable differential and integral calculus through one full year (the equivalent of a one-semester university Calculus 1). AP Calculus BC covers AB plus the additional Calculus 2 content (parametric equations, polar coordinates, vector-valued functions, sequences and series including Taylor and Maclaurin). BC is the equivalent of a Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 sequence at most universities, earns separate AB and BC subscores on the AP report, and is the expected option for students aiming at STEM majors at competitive universities. If the student's math background is solid but not exceptional, AB carefully prepared is often a better outcome than BC under stress. Confirm with the school's math department before locking in the choice.

What's a competitive AP Calculus score?

AP exams are scored 1 to 5. A score of 5 is excellent. A score of 4 is also strong. A score of 3 is considered passing by the College Board but most competitive universities want 4 or 5 for credit or placement. Top-25 universities admitting STEM majors typically expect 5s on AP Calculus BC or AB, and many treat a 5 on BC as significantly more competitive than a 5 on AB for engineering and pure-math admissions. For AP credit purposes, many universities grant one semester of credit for a 4 or 5 on AB and two semesters for a 4 or 5 on BC; check the specific university's AP credit policy.

What's the difference between AP Calculus and IB Math AA?

Different curricula serving overlapping purposes. AP Calculus is one-year (AB) or stretched into two years (BC) of focused calculus, with the AP exam in May. IB Math Analysis and Approaches (AA) is a two-year course covering calculus alongside algebra, functions, statistics, and proof, at Standard Level or Higher Level. IB AA HL is comparable in depth to AP Calculus BC plus some additional content (proof by induction, complex numbers in greater depth). University admissions treat strong results in both curricula favorably. The right choice usually depends on which curriculum the student's school offers; don't switch schools just to choose between them. For schools that offer both, AP is more focused and BC is the right pick for STEM-bound students; IB AA HL is the right pick for students committed to the full IB diploma.

I'm struggling with integration. Is it me or is it normal?

Normal. Differentiation is procedural: a finite set of rules (chain rule, product rule, quotient rule, derivatives of standard functions) covers almost everything. Integration is not procedural: there is no universal method, and many functions have no elementary antiderivative at all. The toolkit (basic antiderivatives, u-substitution, integration by parts, partial fractions, trigonometric substitution, improper integrals, Taylor series for BC) is finite but selecting the right technique for the integral in front of you takes deliberate practice. Most students plateau on integration not because they cannot execute a technique but because they cannot pick which technique to use. Mixed practice sets where the technique is not signaled are the single most useful drill at this level.

Can I do well in calculus if my algebra is shaky?

Not without patching the algebra. A surprising fraction of calculus difficulty traces back to algebra gaps rather than calculus gaps: logarithm rules, exponent rules, factoring quadratics, fraction arithmetic, manipulating negative and fractional exponents, comfort with the unit circle and basic trig identities. When a student is stuck simplifying a derivative or evaluating an integral, the gap is often algebra. The diagnostic lesson surfaces these foundation gaps and the first few weeks of prep patch them before moving forward with the calculus content. Trying to power through calculus with shaky algebra produces the most frustrating kind of plateau.

How much time does AP Calculus prep take?

If the student is enrolled in the AP class, the in-class instruction plus weekly tutoring covers most of the prep through the school year. A student tracking on a 3 who wants to push to a 5 typically takes 4 to 6 months of weekly tutoring plus consistent homework time. A student starting late or catching up on weaker chapters cold typically needs 6 to 9 months. Intensive holiday courses can compress these but timer-aware past-exam practice is the gating step. The release of new AP exams from apcentral each year provides a fresh corpus of authentic prep material, and the AP scoring guidelines for past free-response questions are the most useful single document in AP Calculus prep.

Can multivariable calculus be tutored online?

Yes, and most candidates do, particularly for university-level multivariable where the textbook (Stewart, Marsden and Tromba) is the same regardless of campus and the worked-example workflow translates cleanly to video. How does calculus prep connect to physics, engineering, and machine learning?

Calculus is the mathematical foundation for all three. Classical mechanics is built on calculus (velocity is the derivative of position, force is mass times the derivative of velocity). Electromagnetism is built on multivariable calculus (Maxwell's equations are partial differential equations). Engineering uses calculus across every discipline. Machine learning, particularly gradient descent and backpropagation, is multivariable calculus wearing the clothes of optimization. Students who plan to pursue any of these fields benefit from a deeper calculus foundation than the minimum AP curriculum requires, which is why university calculus often goes further than AP and why a strong AP result is the entry credential rather than the finish line.
